Blockless is a Canadian company, specializing in smart DNS services. It is quite rare among smart DNS providers (and by extension, VPN businesses as well) to encounter a browser-based user interface that provides a fast and seamless experience. The intuitive browser dashboard comes alongside the Blockless client software for both Mac and Windows that hits all the right notes as well. Both deliver quite a leisurely way of providing access to the twenty-five different locations of the company. As with most smart DNS, the main focus of service is granting access to streaming and streamable content. Blockless puts emphasis on television and film in this matter, but sports, music and entertainment intended for children can also be found on the list of channels available. Most broadcasts within reach are either from the USA ok the UK, but other popular countries also get their share of channels. The Smart Guard protection system is a good reason reason to take a look at the 7-day free trial program they run.

Up to 16% off Blockless

Blockless is a special smart DNS from the perspective of usage. Next to a regular setup process, you are also given a browser-based user interface that will make your life much easier. Most companies that offer a smart DNS service do not have client software, and applications in rare cases only. Blockless however, favors PC users with this side of their service by offering both an easy-to-use browser-based dashboard and a desktop client.

Quick and easy tutorial in Blockless interface

The online dashboard can be looked upon as a “browser-based client” from which you can select countries to simulate with a press of a button and manage your account easily. The only other thing you need to do in order to set up your DNS network is changing your DNS address. This varies from device to device, but in every case it is a simple process that does not take more than a few minutes. The Blockless website provides helpful information on how to get things to work – in most cases you have to access the settings of your internet connection. Once you are done with the above, you are ready to go.

Windows and Mac Client

Blockless is almost unique among smart DNS companies in the sense that they actually offer client software you can use. These are primarily available for Windows 8 and Mac, but we found other versions of Windows to be compatible as well (Windows 7 in particular reacts very well). The clients themselves are quite similar to each other and they also closely resemble the screen you encounter when you connect via your browser. Think of it as another leisurely way of doing smart DNS. The functionalities and ease of usage for both software are therefore also the same; there is not much else to add other than highlighting how Blockless is one of the user-friendliest companies out there today.

Smart Guard

There is another great feature of the Blockless experience. Unlike most smart DNS that only offer the proxy level security automatically granted by connecting to a given DNS server, this company has another tool at hand to improve your safety – Smart Guard. Though still in beta state, this asset is very useful in a couple of ways. First it serves as an ad-blocker, removing any unnecessary advertisements from your screen. Secondly, popup windows should not be a problem, either; Smart Guard also aids in the detection of spying programs and some viruses. This is already useful – in the finalized version, hopefully we will get to see graphs, or some form of advanced notification within the limits of the browser Smart Guard runs on. You receive this extra feature free of charge if you are a customer, but you can also utilize it with no costs if you simply opt for the free trial.blockless-smartguard

Channels and streaming services

Blockless offers an average selection of channels in the areas of television shows, film, sports, music and kids entertainment. You can view over 150 different stations or websites, which is a bit above average when compared with other providers. The majority of these reside in the U.S. and the UK, though – it is true that the “western” style of entertainment is coveted, but the strong focus on these two countries’ respective selections indicated that Blockless favors an audience that is interested in the aforementioned kind of content. Therefore, if you are indeed interested in U.S. and UK programs, this might be a suitable company for you. Netflix, Hulu, most of the ABC network, the BBC branch of channels, Eurosport, ESPN, Disney broadcasts, HBO, iHeart Radio and NBC Sports are strong participants that are unblocked by Blockless, to name a few.

Smart DNS network

The main advantage of any smart DNS is that it lets you access a certain country’s restricted content without losing connection speeds. Blockless is no exception from this property; our speed tests revealed only a minor difference between the American and the Dutch locations simulated. There are however only two DNS addresses available, which is a bit too slim in our opinion. Our subtle disappointment comes from the fact that there are twenty five countries to connect to. Some companies offer addresses on a location to location basis, but do not be discouraged; Blockless also gets the job done for sure.blockless-android-regions

Privacy protection

Blockless does collect certain personal information. Your first and last names will be store, along with contact information such as your e-mail address. The IP address of your machine will also be stored, along with your billing info. The last on the official website’s list is a bit vague; the company will collect “any other information which you may provide to us at any time.” They refer to this “collectively as consumer data”. While these points are understood, we are a bit worried about the last part, as it can be understood as data that is provided with your consent, or as data that you can potentially provide – this does not necessarily include consent. Other than this vague wording, we found the company’s privacy policy to be acceptable.

OS, device support

Device support for Blockless is fantastic. A lot of different machines and programs are favored by the company, and all of them have their respective setup guides, with great detail and clear wording. For desktop and laptop operating systems, you have Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP that have their own desktop client. You can also change your DNS address on Mac OS X and use the Mac client, but other OS are not supported today. For television, Samsung Smart TV, LG Smart TV, Sony Smart TV, Toshiba TV, Sharp TV and Vizio TV are available. Gaming consoles are also welcome, with PS Vita, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, the Wii U and Wii on the list. Phones and tablets include iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD. If you are interested in entertainment via Blu-ray, Samsung, LG and Philips are all supported by Blockless. And finally, you can utilize set top boxes as well, with Apple TV, WD Live, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Google TV on the line.

Pricing

With Blockless, prices are average for a smart DNS. But first, we would like to highlight that the company has a one-week free trial program. All you need is a signup and the aforementioned brief setup process, and you can experience any paid customer’s daily routine for seven days without having to provide your payment information.

If you do decide to buy, three options are available. One month costs $4.95 with Blockless. You can also invest semi-annually; six months are 7% off, resulting in an overall price of $27.25 ($4.54 per month). And finally, the annual package is 16% cheaper, with a cost of $49.95. This means a monthly total of $4.16. In our opinion, prices are a bit better than average, but nothing too outstanding.

Pricing structure with Blockless

It is important to state here that in terms of payment options, there is a little holdup, at least if you want to change your payment method. You cannot simply select another one if you try to make a subsequent purchase, but it appears that the company’s help is needed for this. On the official website, they ask you to establish contact with them if you do intend to change it. The following payment options are available: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and PayPal. The available payment methods combined with the selection of channels makes it quite apparent that the main focus of the company is the audience interested in U.S. content.

There are not too many ways to contact Blockless, but support is always readily available and fast. You can either send them a message via your own email, or you can compose one while logged in; a convenient window will guide you through the process. Alternatively, you can contact them via social media – they are active on both Facebook and Twitter, although mostly US and UK related streaming news are published there. We would like to recommend Twitter if you seek quick help; Blockless answers questions very frequently, and are pretty inviting when it comes to assistance. Furthermore, if you encounter a problem that support cannot solve and you live in Canada (or near the capital city), you can give them a call personally, or even visit them in their office.Blockless.com

Bottom line

Blockless is one of the user-friendliest smart DNS services with a number of unique features. The extras available for free are quite beneficial and elevate the quality at hand a bit. We must compliment the browser-based interface and desktop clients Blockless developed. It is a rare sight, having something even resembling a client or an app in the smart DNS business – usually you are just supplied with a couple of DNS addresses. Blockless also thrives on the side of security. The Smart Guard feature is very useful in preventing the appearance unwelcomed websites and disturbing advertisements. Though there are only two DNS addresses supplied by the company, they serve their purpose well, and the selection of countries is also convenient. If you are interested in U.S. and UK content mainly, we recommend Blockless.
