Showtime is originally a cable television broadcaster, founded in 1976. Since then, the company made its way online in multiple iterations. Showtime and Showcase are subscription-based channels, while Showtime Anytime is a potentially free service. By this we mean that by default this is also a pay only website. However, if you are a subscriber to the Showtime television network (needless to say U.S. only), then Showtime Anytime is a free addition to that. This obviously creates a problem for anyone not from the United States. Luckily, this article is about informing you in this matter. Two types of services will be discussed that are both proficient (but different) in dealing with the regional block of Showtime. These are smart DNS and VPN.
Both VPN and smart DNS “unblock” the restrictions of the USA, but they do it via different methods. The former needs a change in your IP address, thereby granting you complete access not only to Showtime Anytime, but the entire U.S. online domain. The latter involves switching your DNS address up, which results in gaining access to select websites only, usually streaming-related ones. This means that VPN is more of a general purpose service, while smart DNS is explicitly designed for sites like Showtime. This shows in terms of safety and speed as well. VPN companies use encryptions to protect you from being detected whilst you connect to other regions, but smart DNS does not. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that you are more exposed if you use the latter. However, encryptions slow your internet speeds down, meaning that smart DNS – which does not use any encryption – is as fast as your regular connection. In our opinion, this makes it more suitable for work with websites like Showtime. Once you’re connected using your VPN or smart DNS, you can access the Showtime sites via Windows, Mac, and also via applications for iOS, Android, Amazon and Roku.
There are a number of companies that are worthy giving second thoughts when it comes to viewing Showtime Anytime. There are a couple picks that we would like to highlight, one of which is Unlocator. Even though they do not have that much to do with hiding online, they offer good features for a smart DNS. You can utilize the company’s apps that help with IP updating (for Android and iOS) and also their Smart VPN plan, which is a combination of a smart DNS and a VPN.
Then there is OverPlay SmartDNS, which despite being advertised as a VPN primarily actually has a better smart DNS. Still, their 30+ countries is a good number in smart DNS terms, and the organization is also equipped with a JetSwitch feature that will help you choose the right region when you connect to websites that have different versions across multiple countries.
We would also like to highlight PureVPN SmartDNS. This product is sort of a sidekick to the VPN this Hong Kong based company is more known for. Still, it fares well among other smart DNS services, with about 300 channels to choose from, including Showtime. And, despite being priced lower than its competition, you can even get it for free if you subscribe to the VPN first.
