Another Website Blocked in Russia and How To Access It

Another Website Blocked in Russia and How To Access It

By Leo S.Leo S. Verified by Sander D.Sander D. Last updated: November 27, 2024 (0)

In our age and day it’s getting more and more common to have access blocked to a certain site. The reasons may vary in each country. However, there are some usual targets – like Facebook, YouTube or Twitter and we could also name a handful of countries that are on the frontline of such blockings. This time the victim was LinkedIn though, which has been blocked for good in Russia after a rather long process. The measure of the restriction was already discussed by the online recruitment platform, but since their actions were against the country’s policy, Russian ISPs had no other choice but to comply and enforce a regional block. Notwithstanding, there is still a way to traverse these and gain access to LinkedIn.

The reason

In a nutshell, the main reason for LinkedIn being blocked for good in Russia is that the country’s policy forces companies to store Russian users’ information on servers located on the home ground, and the social network refused to do so. Therefore, the Russian ISPs were forced to block access to LinkedIn, or they’d be subject to fines and penalties from the government itself.

However, the really juicy stuff is that the separation – which affected “only” around 5 million registered Russian users – was meant as a warning for other multinational companies. Microsoft seems to be the next victim sharing LinkedIn’s fate, as they might also leave the eastern market. The Russian government already started introducing their own software in order to release the country from “the dependence of American corporations”.

Unblocking LinkedIn in Russia

Notwithstanding, if you are in Russia and still want – or need – to get access to LinkedIn, consider making a small investment in a VPN. A Virtual Private Network will allow access to any blocked website around the web, regardless of your country. They provide you a number of different servers spread across the globe and, if you’re in Russia, all you need to do is connect to a VPN server in a foreign country (where LinkedIn is not blocked) and you’ll be attributed with a foreign IP address. Once you revisit the page it would seem that nothing ever happened as the page will read your IP address and think you are not in Russia anymore. In addition, VPNs are also useful for security purposes as they protect your information and data from everyone trying to spy on you, due to heavy encryptions and especially designed protocols.
