Although we live in the 21st century, there are still some world conflicts and fragile relationships between countries that seem to have existed since the first breath of mankind’s existence. One of the most important and feared ones is between Russia and United States who can cooperate to resolve any other major conflict in the world. Instead they disagree on what salad they want for lunch while the waiter – as in the rest of the world – awaits in great apprehension. In fact, there were many cases that led these two great nations to this situation with diverse consequences and the latest is the fact that the infamous Russian president Vladimir Putin wants to release his home nation from the dependence on American corporations. The first target is also the greatest: Microsoft.
In order to take this action forward, Putin’s objective is to replace the American softwarepresence in the territory with Russian developed products. In a first stage, it is estimated that “only” 60,000 computers are going to use Microsoft for one last time as the first service affected should be email. Considering this, Moscow wants to reach the entire country’s email servicestarting by removing Exchange and Outlook usage from their computers and replace it with the Russian state-run carrier Rostelecom PJSC.
Evermore, this is only the first measure as it is expected that the government eliminates all Microsoft divisions with the next targets possibly being Windows and Office. In fact, the reason why these two weren’t hunted yet is due to the lack of a proper trustworthy alternative; Moscow is currently studying the case and deliberating what would be the best heir. In the near future it is most likely that the number of computers running the new apps could reach the 600,000 mark.
There are plans in the making to raise taxes for all American tech companies that operate within Russian borders making their products more expensive and, therefore, less likely to be purchased. This is a measure that will assure indirectly that all this encouragement for the adoption of local software is effective. Also, by doing this, the government guarantees that all the efforts of recent years towards toping the country’s technology response are effective and all its citizens’ data will consequently be stored on Russian controlled servers.
