A lot of Mac users aren’t aware of just how vulnerable their computers are with the common misconception that they’re immune to viruses and malware. Although macOS is certainly a more secure system than its rival, Windows, there are still weaknesses to be exploited and plenty of people looking to exploit them. Fortunately, there are a number of security suites dedicated to fighting back and keeping users safe from outside threats. One such example is Israel-based Airo AV who has been protecting its customers since 2017. The great thing about Airo is that it can perform a full scan of your system whilst running seamlessly in the background without affecting your regular performance. Airo also comes with a browser extension for Google Chrome and Safari to protect you from malware, adware, and more. Airo Security comes with a seven-day free trial to allow you to test out everything on offer and you might discover that you weren’t as safe as you once thought.
Airo is incredibly easy to set up; simply allowing permissions on your Mac is enough to get you up and running. The first thing you’ll notice after installing is that it’s very stylishly designed software, usually Airo lives in your taskbar but it can be opened as a separate window as well. Since there isn’t a great deal of customization to be had with Airo, you’re ready to get scanning straight away.
Airo Security is very light on features – besides scanning your files and protecting you from any attacks, it doesn’t come in a bundle alongside other software like Mac optimizers or VPNs as some of its competitors do. We do like that Airo automatically updates its database of viruses and ransomware to keep you protected, and there are constantly additions to the list.
Our favorite thing about Airo is how unobtrusively a complete system scan runs in the background without affecting your computer’s overall performance so you can carry on playing games or watching Netflix without any issues. Although one criticism of this is that the complete scan takes a long time to finish – for our tests it took just over an hour – so it’s a good thing that it can be done in the background. Meanwhile, the quick scan is true to its name, taking exactly a minute to scan.
We put Airo to the test by downloading EICAR’s test malware files. Before we even had a chance to open them Airo was quick to quarantine the threatening files, so we were able to immediately delete them. Airo also lets you release the files if you feel they have given a false positive result.
There’s only one extra with Airo Security, and that’s the web extension for Google Chrome and Safari. The extension is made to identify malicious software in downloads – although it seemed to be sleeping on the job when we downloaded the EICAR test malware. The extension also aims to help block phishing scams, and scan for identity fraud. It’s a pretty lightweight feature but there’s no harm in installing it and it’s regularly updated like its software counterpart.
Airo’s offers yearly subscriptions for its security service that vary depending on how many devices you want to cover. The prices aren’t the cheapest considering its rivals offer similar deals that usually come with a variety of extras but at the same time they’re not going to break the bank either. The cheapest way to get Airo is with the single suit covering one Mac for one year at $49.99 (reduced from an arbitrary price of $69.99) which comes out to the equivalent of just $4.17 a month, a pretty good price to keep your Mac safe. Other options allow you to protect up to three computers with the Pro Suite or up to five with the Family Suite priced at $69.99 and $89.99 respectively.
Before you commit to Airo you have the chance of enjoying its seven-day free trial to test out its security features and every purchase comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
There isn’t a vast array of options for contacting Airo’s customer service – filling out an online form with your inquiry is the only way to get in touch. The website also has a fairly small FAQ section, which gives customers the ability to request that Airo examines a suspicious application or website. The labs section has a glossary of terms for users to learn and an infrequently updated blog with security news.
Airo is antivirus software that acts fast to keep your Mac safe from threats. Unfortunately, there aren’t a great deal of features available for Airo which makes it feel like less of an well-rounded product when compared to its Mac security rivals. However, there is something great about being able to run a complete scan of your computer in the background and still being free to use your computer as normal without any performance issues – we just wish there was a little more of Airo Security to use.
