Although cloud-based solutions are easy to set up and handle, there are still plenty of less tech-savvy people who have no idea how such things work, often turning to the internet to find thorough explanations of the process. However, the information about VoIP on the internet is so broad and versatile it can be a challenge to find the right info for you, not to forget that many times it can be misleading and ultimately end up confusing users even more. Thankfully there are plenty of handy guide books about VoIP, some of which we’ve covered before. The ‘For Dummies’ series is one of the longest running self-help manuals available, and for good reason. Written by Timothy V. Kelly and costing between $11-25 on Amazon, VoIP for Dummies promises to help you save money in teaching you how to set up your own VoIP network, but is it worth the cost?

What does the book say?

VoIP for dummies: the ultimate basics guide for cloud-based telephony

With VoIP for Dummies you can easily discover how cloud-based telephony can save you money, how the system works, and what are the best ways to integrate your new phone system into your network, regardless of whether you’re choosing to install VoIP for residential or business purposes.

The book explains in plain English the use of VoIP in general, the available network types, but most importantly describes how to set up a wireless network, what kind of services exist and demonstrates why it’s time to make the big move to the cloud. The book is only 259 pages long and is divided into 4 logical parts, which isn’t too challenging for anyone looking to self-teach themselves VoIP network. There is even a list of VoIP providers and a glossary.

The cover of VoIP for Dummies

The first section of the book covers the very basics, even going as far to explain how much you can save by migrating to VoIP. The second part details how VoIP actually works: it explains more about bandwidth, speeds, transports, the use of wireless and VPN technology, and the different phone types you can add to your system. The third part is about making the big move to VoIP including explanations of localization, cost management, setting up an office network and such, Lastly is a series of top 10 lists: reasons for switching to VoIP at home or in your office, answering myths about cloud telephony and the best VoIP manufacturers.

Is it enough for me?

While VoIP for Dummies is a huge asset in understanding the gears operating the mechanics behind virtual phone systems, it’s important to remember that this is still only an introduction to the very basics. This is why it is highly recommended to broaden your knowledge, not only on VoIP in general but also on telecoms, SIP communication and networking – especially if you have a limited understanding of the technical aspects of VoIP. There are other books there to help with this further education, including other books in the For Dummies series such as VoIP Deployment for Dummies, which should be considered a direct sequel to this beginner’s book.

Aside from the above, you can always turn to our useful FAQ, handy glossary and many reviews and comparisons of the best VoIP providers here at Best Reviews. Alongside VoIP for Dummies and our articles, you’ll become a true VoIP expert in no time.
