Unblocking Snapchat in China With a VPN

Unblocking Snapchat in China With a VPN

No matter whether you live in China, you visited the country before or you are just interested in Chinese culture in general, you probably know that free access to the internet in the land of the Great Wall is nothing but a mirage. In fact, according to the Freedom on the Net Report of 2016 China is the unquestionable leader of online repression, and all signs show that this sad fact won’t change anytime soon. To get a hold of how insanely restricted internet access in China is, imagine a world without the best-known social media services, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the list goes on. The appropriately named Great Firewall blocks Snapchat as well, meaning that if you want to take a few snaps freely under the shadow of Mao you need a way to outsmart Chinese internet authorities.

As a website dedicated to everything related to VPNs, our recommendation would obviously be this service – but recently China has publicly declared war against VPN companies, making free access to uncensored content a bit harder. Still, there are plenty of VPNs able to make their services reach the country with which you can simply unblock not only Snapchat but many other services too.

VPNs vs online censorship

Like we said before, China started a public witch hunt against VPNs, but fortunately not all companies are under fire. Ergo, you only need to find a provider still working in China. However, you shouldn’t stop there: you also need to make sure that your chosen provider has a mobile app, which, given the fact that most VPNs have mobile clients, won’t be much of a problem.

Once you’ve made your choice you just need to connect to a VPN server located outside China, namely in a country where Snapchat is not blocked. Although it heavily depends on your provider, you may be able to choose between different VPN protocols as well, even within the app itself. This is more important than you think, as it will determine not only your connection speed, but your encryption level too. However, take into consideration that one of the above-mentioned attributes has to be sacrificed for the sake of the other: in simpler words, you have to choose between more security and higher connection speed. Given this, if you still want to combine security with speed, we recommend OpenVPN which allows users to web surf safely at better connection speed.
