Trupanion vs Healthy Paws Comparison

Trupanion vs Healthy Paws Comparison

By Irina P.Irina P. Verified by Adam B.Adam B. Last updated: July 17, 2024 (0)

There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when choosing a pet insurance provider, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the new information. However, there are always a few easily distinguishable features that can help pet owners make the right decision. In the case of Trupanion and Healthy Paws, the biggest difference is the level of customization that either company offers. Otherwise, they more or less stand on even footing, although their strengths both lie in different areas. Trupanion is more innovative in its approach, while Healthy Paws makes its services as customer-friendly and as simple as possible.

As one of the top names in the pet insurance market, Trupanion is a great choice for owners wanting an extra level of protection for their pets in an emergency. The company’s policies, however, do not come cheap. This is mostly due to the rather unique plan structure it uses, which does not allow for much customization. This is unlike most insurance providers, which at the very least give customers the choice of deductibles and reimbursement rates. With Trupanion, the only financial component that can be personalized is the deductible, which is calculated per condition/per lifetime as opposed to the usual annual renewal that most providers use.

The company reimburses 90% of the medical expenses covered by its policy, thereby keeping premium expenses high. Besides choosing the deductible, the only way to modify the price is by switching between different levels of coverage. While Trupanion only has one insurance plan, there are optional extras that customers can select when enrolling their pets, such as coverage for homeopathic care or even boarding fees.

Healthy Paws

Unlike other pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws is not one to limit its coverage. No matter the cost of any given policy, the list of covered conditions will always remain the same, making the service straightforward and easy to understand. The coverage that Healthy Paws offers is good, but not quite as extensive as Trupanion’s thanks to extra options added onto the basic plan.

Healthy Paws can be less expensive than Trupanion since the reimbursement level and deductible that a customer chooses can keep the premiums quite low. However, Trupanion offers the choice of a $0 deductible, while this option is not available with Healthy Paws where its minimum is $100. This amount is reset at the end of every year, too, as opposed to Trupanion’s unique per-condition method.

Waiting periods are somewhat less with Healthy Paws, however, with 15 days for both accidents and illnesses as opposed to Trupanion’s 30 days, although the latter has its waiting periods for accidents counted separately and is only four days long.

Conclusion

Both companies offer good comprehensive plans, although the options provided when enrolling a pet can extend Trupanion’s coverage further for an extra fee. However, neither provider has an accident plan, so they are not really suitable for old or ill pets because of the exclusion of preexisting conditions.

When it comes to prices, Healthy Paws can be less expensive depending on the reimbursement level and amount of deductible that a customer chooses. The waiting period for illnesses is unreasonably long with Trupanion, however, and there are no extensions available for certain genetic and congenital conditions, unlike Healthy Paws where hip dysplasia is at least covered after a 12-month waiting period. All in all, both companies have their strengths and weaknesses, and only pet owners can decide which aspects they consider to be more important.
