It’s undeniable that online dating heavily influences the way that couples meet each other. In 2013, one third of married couples met each other online, and the number has steadily grown ever since. And you can bet your bottom dollar that such important change didn’t go unnoticed by Hollywood. To be frank, the film industry caught up pretty early on as far back as the 90s. As years passed, several films saw the light of the day, featuring popular real life dating sites as the vehicle for the main couple’s blossoming romance. Even better, most of these classics or hidden gems can be rewatched on Netflix!

You’ve got mail

film starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks back from 1998, when chat rooms were independent and people used AOL email accounts. All of these play a role in the film, revolving around the two stars who are developing an online relationship without knowing that they are business rivals. Meg Ryan makes a valid point about internet relationships, commenting on the limitations that come with made up names and a lack of physical contact. Luckily with the appearance of dating sites, singles can get a wider picture about each other.

Must love dogs

A 2005 American romantic comedy, Must Love Dogs stars Diane Lane and John Cusack. The film’s main theme is starting over when you are past the age of 40. Sarah Nolan (played by the leading lady), has no interest in pursuing romance, but her sister secretly creates a profile for her on PerfectMatch.com. Unfortunately Sarah must learn the hard way that inaccurate information on a dating website can lead to some traumatizing first dates (including the one with John Cusack). But the film teaches us that happiness can be only achieved by not giving up.

Catfish

This movie isn’t about a specific dating site and instead focuses on a worrying trend called ‘catfishing’. This 2010 American film can be viewed as a documentary film on the matter. Nev Schulman develops a relationship with Megan on Facebook, so far so good. But when they meet in person, he realizes that he never spoke with ‘Megan’, but with a person pretending to be her. The recognition is baffling because the fake Megan’s Facebook activity was backed up by comments made with other fake profiles.

Christian mingle

This film is a romantic comedy from 2014 that portrays the relationship between Gwyneth (Lacey Chabert) and Paul (Jonathan Patrick Moore). They met on Christian Mingle, a dating site for Christian singles. However, Gwyneth has a secret: she isn’t actually a Christian. So she arms herself with The Bible for Dummies and Christianity for Dummies. But are those enough to bridge the gap between them? Or does she need to learn a more divine lesson?

The lionshare

Romantic novels often use the pirate era as the theme, but it works the other way around too. This movie was released in 2009 and gives a modern day interpretation of piracy – namely torrenting. Our hero, Nick, is a lover of music who meets with his new girlfriend online. She introduces him to the secret world of content piracy that pushes Nick into a downward spiral. And in the end, a genuine connection cannot be forced.
