There’s No tvOS VPN App? Using a VPN with Apple TV Anyway

Ever since the introduction of the fourth generation of Apple TV there is a full-blown operating system for the device. tvOS is the core of Apple TV and, just like iOS for iPhone, iPad and macOS for Apple computers, it offers developers the opportunity to create apps for it. So many were hoping that the world’s top VPN companies would develop some sort of VPN app for tvOS, since the TV is the prime device on which want to stream content from anywhere in the world. However, due to incompatibility issues, it’s currently not possible to get a native VPN app or client on Apple’s tvOS like you can for your Mac, iPhone or iPad. But don’t give up hope of enjoying the same content on tvOS, as there are still a couple ways you can indirectly deploy a VPN on your Apple TV.

When using a VPN on your device seems impossible

Just like game consoles, smart TVs etc., Apple TV is a device on which you can’t directly install proper VPN apps. Although restrictions mostly depend on manufacturers and/or the product itself, the main reason is usually the lack of an appropriate built-in feature to support VPNs, while computers, tablets and smartphones boast VPN support by default. This is the exact case of Apple TVs and their operating system: Apple doesn’t let you VPN settings on tvOS. Furthermore, the so-called network extension APIs, which give the possibility for users and app developers to create and manage personal VPN configurations, is currently locked by Appleitself. Given this, it is not very likely that this situation will change any time sooner.

How to VPN on apple TV anyway

Despite the seemingly hopeless situation, what VPN taught us is that if you want to unlock something, nothing can stand in your way – including incompatibility or restrictions by the manufacturer. In other words, you can have a VPN on Apple TV, albeit you might want to resort to use some tricks first: our number one recommendation is to go with a VPN router setup.

There are two options you can choose from: getting a brand new pre-flashed router ready for VPN use or a manual configuration of the VPN on your existing router. The first option speaks for itself: all you have to do is purchase a new router with a VPN already installed thereon and after setting up the wireless connection with Apple TV you are free to enjoy unlimited content. The second option, however, is a bit trickier, especially for less tech-savvy users. Fortunately, there are many guides for both DD-WRT and Tomato routers on your favorite VPN providers‘ websites and blogs, so you can have the VPN set and ready with ease.

Regardless of the chosen method, once you are done, not only you can extend the VPN range to your entire home network and all devices, but you’ll be able to watch unblocked Apple TV content too. However, if you want your router to affect solely your Apple TV then you can always share your internet connection from your Mac to it.
