Social experiments are a popular sub-genre of videos often featured on YouTube. Some call them an in-depth look into the ‘shadowy side of society’, while others consider them as no more than glorified pranks. The truth is probably between the two: social experiment videos are meant to test random people’s reactions to certain situations. For example, does a nerd have a chance to score on a Tinder date? How are fat people treated by their dates? And can you get more social benefits if you claim it’s for a date and not for food? Unfortunately most of these videos lack a satisfying conclusion, so we had to come up with the conclusion ourselves.
A certain risk people take when meeting their partner in real life is when they look different from their profile page. In these scenarios an outdated photo is usually to blame, but does being fatter than on the image really matter that much? Spoiler alert: only for guys. This two-partner social experiment showed that men are more likely to walk out on a date when their partner is overweight, while women tend to give a chance so long as the chubby date is kind.
This is another highly popular prank that requires some preparation and possibly the rental of an expensive car. The premise is simple: let’s see whether or not women change their attitude towards you when they learn about your wealth. The prank features our man trying to persuade a lady to date him and, upon rejection, pulls out their ace up their sleeve. However, the joke always ends up on those with the materialistic mindset.
ChinoAlphaWolf is popular for his series where he plays a different role in each of his Tinder dates. In this particular case he portrayed a geeky and rude version of himself. Surprisingly, the act was so convincing that both of his dates agreed to go to a Halloween party with him. So it shows that women don’t always choose the ‘good guy’, and being different doesn’t automatically ruins your chances.
The dating agency Social Concierge paired up 20 singles to perform this social experiment. They were asked to kiss each other before sitting down to talk. Most of them were nervous, but 4 of 10 couples confirmed that they felt some sort of spark. However, they still admitted that a simple kiss is enough to move on for a date. As the video’s conclusion says: “Chemistry is great, but we all need a bit of chat”.
According to this video, people are willing to help out a poor bloke who cannot afford to pay for his date, but pass by if he is on a verge of starvation. Money for the right cause? But if you think about it, it makes a little bit of sense. Citizens are used to seeing beggars all around the streets who might not actually buy bread from the money they receive but alcohol. However, a young man pleading to fund a successful date? It has a certain cheeky vibe.
Watching these videos are good for a laugh and to get improve your spirit, but don’t take them too seriously. They are useful to disprove certain myths, but a lot depends on your own personality and charisma. Dating is about being open towards your partner and to learn more about each other. However, if you sit down with prejudice or role-play instead of being honest, your behavior will come across as weird, grotesque, and aggressive. In other words, you’ll be rejected not because you are fat, a nerd or anything else, but because you are unpleasant about it. Just have confidence and let your partner judge the true nature of you.
