Overview comparison for Shutterfly Photo Books, Photobook America

Shutterfly

There is no denying the fact that Shutterfly is a superb photo printing service and being able to get photo books created by Shutterfly’s professionals via an extra service is definitely one of the reasons for that. Regardless of whether the book is assembled by the company’s staff or by the customer via the online editor or the mobile app, a purchase from Shutterfly is guaranteed to produce a final product that will be up to all expectations.

In fact, creating the book with the editor is where Shutterfly truly shows its capabilities, providing a virtually unlimited experience where the book’s content is concerned. Additionally, there is the option to accept matching layouts and backgrounds suggested by the editor’s Ideal Page feature or to combine any of the 350+ styles with one another. The physical attributes of the books can be changed to almost any degree, too, thanks to the six photo book sizes, many high-quality covers, various photo paper types, and the option to choose from regular or layflat bindings.

But by far the biggest strength of Shutterfly is the cheap base prices – with books starting from $15.99 – and the exceptionally fast worldwide shipping that only takes 3-10 business days.

Photobook America

Although it’s not as much of a behemoth as Shutterfly, Photobook America is still a decent service. For starters, its photo book editor appears in three different forms: as a straightforward online builder, a rather simple mobile app, and a desktop editor that includes a few exclusive features like a handy virtual assistant. However, the online editor has nothing to be ashamed of either, since it provides everything needed for putting together any kind of photo book, covering the whole range of layouts, stickers, backgrounds, and even photo masks. Additionally there is the option to change the would-be book’s size and cover retroactively, which is a huge asset should you change your mind during the editing process.

The list of physical attributes is pretty impressive as well, even if they cannot be freely combined with each other like with Shutterfly. Despite that, customers can still choose from ten different photo book sizes, three cover categories, and extras like layflat binding and presentation boxes.

Admittedly, the base prices of Photobook America are a bit more expensive – with photo books starting from $21.99 – but the company more than makes up for it by providing an insanely fast, seven-day worldwide shipping and an outstanding quality for its products.

Conclusion

At first it may seem like that the winner is a no-brainer, and in all honesty we wouldn’t be surprised if you picked Shutterfly to be the service to bring your photo book to life. The price and overall quality of its products, the insane variety of editing options, and the fact that it provides everything customers wish for when it comes to assembling the photo book of their dreams are only a part of all the things that made Shutterfly a true market leader.

But Photobook America is still a worthy competitor of the photo printing giant thanks to always providing a bit more at certain fields. Those extras like the desktop builder, a wider variety of physical attributes for photo books, and the seven-day guaranteed shipping should indeed be convincing enough for many customers to give this service a chance.

I have three groupon vouchers for Photobook America that were given to me as a gift.  I’m in the midst of trying to format my books and, honestly, if I didn’t have the prepaid vouchers to use, I’d give it up and go elsewhere.

First, Photobook America apparently no longer has downloadable software available to allow one to do the formatting offline….which means one must use up computer bandwidth trying to learn their online software.  Unless you have unlimited high speed computer access, this can be a major problem.

Second, the online “editor” is not at all intuitive to use.  And the supposed  “guide” is next to useless.  10 pages that tell you NOTHING about how any of the tools work and absolutely no explanation regarding the limitations of those tools.  They don’t even say what types of picture files can be uploaded or what the maximum uploaded file size is.  Turns out that only png and jpeg files will work.  No explanation about whether or HOW a picture can be cropped using their tools.  No explanation about resizing uploaded pictures.  No explanation about how to ensure that images are lined up neatly if you want them that way.   Etc. Etc. Etc.  I speak as someone who taught myself to use Photoshop plus  several different computer-assisted drawing programs. (I even designed my own 3500 sq ft home using CAD architectural program after teaching myself to use the program.  So I’m pretty computer savvy.)

Third, Photobook America’s “chat” service doesn’t seem to be available EXCEPT during regular business office hour (9AM-5PM EST) and sometimes not even then.  The chat button just disappears so you can’t even ask for assistance when you get frustrated at odd hours.

Fourth, their “contact us” page REQUIRES you to insert an order ID number before you can send them a message.  This is NOT HELPFUL since all the technical issues with creating a photobook occur BEFORE one submits an order… so you don’t HAVE an order ID and thus cannot use the “contact us” page.  During one of my early chats, I did get a phone number (1-646-918-5879) but that number is only answered during regular business hours.

Finally, while Photobook America does allow you to add text, your ability to POSITION that text EXACTLY where you want it is extremely limited. There is no way to focus in on the pages and whenever you try to reposition text the text boxes “jump”….probably half an inch or more at a time. Smaller adjustments are simply not possible.  And, if you accidentally grab one of the corners of a text box while trying to reposition the box, then the text box changes sizes (as one would expect) BUT the text inside the box also changes sizes which is totally unexpected!  So, if you’re trying to put text in two side-by-side boxes so as to create newspaper style columns of print and you’re not paying extremely close attention, you could easily wind up with something like  12 point font in one column and 14.6 pt font in the one right beside it.  Needless to say, that is going to look downright sloppy and unprofessional.

If all you want to do is create a quick “scrapbook” look… like one manage with scissors and colored paper from the craft store, these limitations might not bother you.  But if you’re trying to create a truly professional looking memory book, Photobook America doesn’t seem to have the necessary chops to do it.

I’ll update this review (or add another one) if/when I ever get these books finished and see the final product.

I purchased Photobook America for a book and I’ve had such a horrible experience with this week. After putting in MANY hours; 6 to be a  fact, creating my book… the last step to conclude the order would not go through… I tried everything I could and it was froze from completing. I had to then start over and recreate  the whole project…. I had their on-line assistant chatting with me and I knew more than this person… It was a waste of time.  I’m so frustrated with this program that I’m done trying and they can keep my money and loose any further business with me.

  3. I used photobook america 11 X 14 40 page book…..Outstanding.  Just rceived the book and quality of color and overall appearance is Outstanding!  Simple to use program and add text!  I’m using the books to make my family history with photos…..Very Happy

You are one real LUCKY person, if you really had this experience.. It was the worst I’ve ever had with any program/site for creating a book.

Shutterfly is a much better product!!! I purchased a Groupon for Photobook America thinking I could save a couple of dollars. The books I have purchased from Shutterfly are all of good quality and I should have remembered that before purchasing the groupon. The website for photobook America is difficult to use. I never learned how to add subtitles even with the help tab. The book I received was of poor quality and nothing I would want to share with anyone!!! Never again!!!!!!!
