Setting up IPVanish for VPN Action with Kodi

Setting up IPVanish for VPN Action with Kodi

We don’t need to tell you that with a VPN you’ll be able to circumvent not only online censorship, but geo-blocked content as well. But did you know that you can set it up for Kodi too? This will allow you to watch TV channels from other countries that appear as blocked due to your physical location. Also, this is useful since many ISPs are blocking Kodi add-ons with some even banning Kodi users, so a VPN is almost required to let you get the most comfortable access.

Let’s take IPVanish, our editor’s choice of 2016 as an example. All you need to have access to everything that Kodi offers on whatever device you want (computers, smartphones, among others that are supported – we’ll take Windows settings as an example) is your VPN service configured with the OpenVPN protocol. Then… well let’s say that you live in Switzerland but you want to watch a Danish TV channel. As soon as you access the channel online, it shows you that annoying “content blocked” error message. What you need to do is go over to your IPVanish app and select a server located in Denmark, and from then on the geo-block will be thrown out of the window. You’ll now just need to launch Kodi and you’ll be able to access that TV since your virtual location has changed.

But IPVanish can also be set on other devices such as Amazon Fire TV and Android boxes so you can join in on the Kodi fun from your sofa. The key trick here is to have your IPVanish VPN connection run through a DD-WRT or Tomato router. Amazon Fire TV for example is not capable of connecting to a VPN by itself. In short, it will require some technical knowledge to get everything up and running, though the support pages of IPVanish and other VPN providers alike give you very helpful step-by-step guides to help you during the preparation of your VPN router.

Android App on Android boxes

In the case of Android boxes though it’s easier since you only need to download the IPVanish Android app from the Google Store, and then you should be able to run IPVanish on there. You can of course use the aforementioned routers as well. You’ll need to log in with your IPVanish account and choose a server, and from that point onwards the app will keep running in the background. After you launched the service you want, whether it’s Kodi or Netflix for example, the VPN will do its work.
