PPTP Thrown Out of the Window by iOS 10 and macOS Sierra

PPTP support is now water under the bridge for Apple, at least for the newer versions iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. The announcement was made back in July 2016 and, besides this being quite the common presence for VPN protocol configuration, truth being told we are not surprised by the American company’s decision, as this was in fact the weakest VPN protocol anyone could count on. This can be seen as a required step that, sooner or later, had to be taken towards a safer future since the newer versions of Apple software will discard any unsafe measures and will not allow purely fast protocols.

Computer Thrown Out

One small step for apple…

Truth is; PPTP may be missed by those who like to use it for speed purposes, as it is indeed the faster one. Regarding protocols, as you may know since we dedicated many articles to these, encryption and speed are directly related to each other since if one increases, the other has the exact opposite effect. Considering this, it is no surprise that Apple decided to remove the fastest, yet the most vulnerable protocol from their newer software versions since it features no encryption whatsoever and would, therefore, leave your online data completely exposed.

…One giant leap for online safety

Nonetheless there is a variety of alternatives you can use. You can always downgrade to iOS 9 or any previous versions, and OS X El Capitan (and earlier) because the PPTP protocol is still available on these. But if your desires are to move forward instead of moving back, then you should consider opting for one of the other protocol alternatives, as these provide you more complete and useful support since they do in fact encrypt your online traffic. OpenVPN has been gaining ground among all others since it is by default the best choice and a close to perfect balance between speed and safety. In other words, OpenVPN is the one you want. Nonetheless there are other valid choices such as IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec and SSTP that can also suit you just fine according to your own purposes for internet use.
