The guinea pig for our comparison test was actually a 6 1/2 year old mixed breed indoor cat that is part Maine Coon, male and neutered. He has no health conditions and is not overweight. The rates for this pet will be much lower than those for a purebred dog with a propensity to breed-specific conditions.

Levels of coverage

Pets Best insurance

While you may want full coverage for your pet, it’s not always necessary. You should always try to include routine care coverage in your plan. The Pets Best Insurance recommended Pets First plan would cost $52.22 per month for a neutered male housecat with no preexisting conditions. The Pets First plan includes a per-incident limit of $7000 and a lifetime limit of $100,000. It is extremely unlikely that the average pet is every going to require that much coverage.

The Pets Basic plan has a per-incidence limit of $2,500 and a lifetime limit of $42,500. Both plans reimburse up to 80% of your vet bill and cover the expected procedures as well as behavioral conditions and burial and cremation. Choosing Pets Basic with a $100 deductible reduced the monthly premium to $38.69, this plan covers routine care.

Embrace Pet insurance

In order to obtain prescription coverage and an annual deductible lower than $500, we had to move up from Embrace’s Budget plan with a $12.19 per month premium to the Everyday plan with a $21.57 per month premium. The prescription coverage does not include heartworm medication, a regular expense for dog owners.

The annual maximum is $5000 and the reimbursement amount is up to 80%. Unlike Pets Best Insurance, Embrace Pet Insurance did not include an option to add routine care coverage. Something called “Wellness Rewards” is optional under “Design A Custom Policy”. The monthly premium for a custom policy is $30.42 per month.

Pet insurance companies generally offer discounts for multiple pets. It is vital to closely compare pet insurance companies to make sure that you get the coverage your unique pet needs. It’s also advisable to deal only with BBB accredited businesses so that you have some recourse in case of a dispute with a pet insurance company.
