Kelly Benefits, a payroll and benefits company, suffered a breach in December 2024, exposing the sensitive information of nearly half a million people.
The exposed data included names, social security numbers, tax ID numbers, health insurance information, and medical information. Initially, the breach was believed to have affected only 32,000 individuals, but later estimations indicate that this number could be as high as 410,000.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office revealed the data theft, and a thorough investigation finalized in March 2025, found that the cyberattack took place between December 12 and December 17, 2024. During this time, hackers infiltrated Kelly Benefit’s IT infrastructure, allowing them to exfiltrate highly sensitive data. At this time, it’s still unknown who’s responsible for the attack.
Kelly Benefits is now facing a long list of class action lawsuits from its customers, who allege failure to protect highly confidential information. To bring them some relief, the company offered them identity protection services and credit monitoring for free. The actual cost of this data breach is still unclear.
