Latest IPVanish Update Brings us SOCKS5 Proxy Support

Latest IPVanish Update Brings us SOCKS5 Proxy Support

Not that long ago we told you IPVanish is the VPN provider that just won’t stand still, and once again we can bring you another service upgrade. Jokes apart, this really puts a smile on our faces since it shows how much care the company puts in its service and customers since we are the ones continuously raising the bar since other VPN providers are catching up on the company. SOCKS5 proxy is a feature some of the other top VPN providers including NordVPN and TorGuard already had in their armory, and now IPVanish is joining the SOCKS5 party. This is only one of the many reasons why IPVanish has conquered the gold medal and our editor’s choice a while ago and why it still remains there.

A new added feature

This time, changes were made regarding the proxy server support with a new and much-welcomed option: SOCKS5 proxy. This new feature can now be found next to the server list tab on IPVanish‘s Control Panel the next time you log in to the client.

A proxy server is another way you can circumvent geo-blocks since these act as a middleman between your device and the website you intend to visit, also giving you an anonymous IP address different from your real one. So far so good right? Right, but this is the only similarity between proxy servers and VPNs. The latter gives you full data protection, since it encrypts all your traffic, while proxies don’t. This means that you can still get tracked from any 3rd parties wherever you go online.

What differentiates SOCKS5 and why you should use it

SOCKS5 is a specific protocol for proxy servers and can be described as an updated version of the previous SOCKS protocol – or SOCKS4 – that supports more advanced technologies, such as the UDP protocol and the new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) . SOCKS5 is considered the most flexible of proxy server protocols too since SOCKS servers cannot distinguish between different network traffic types. Also, as aforementioned, because proxy servers do not feature any kind of encryption dragging them down, they will be always faster than any VPN. This makes proxies suitable for geographical block circumvention if encrypted traffic is not a concern for you and all you really need is a fast anonymous connection. Streaming blocked content for instance is a perfect purpose to use a SOCKS5 proxy with. The convenient thing is that SOCKS5 is available right from the same desktop client you’re using for IPVanish’s VPN servers, making it easy to shift between both solutions as you switch from browsing, to streaming, gaming and other online activities.
