Interview with SaferVPN

SaferVPN has only been around since 2013, and yet it has already established a solid VPN service with a rich set of features that is expanding further quickly. Their apps have seen constant improvements in SaferVPN’s aim to make the service as simple to use as possible, and the iOS app we should be seeing really soon is going to be another result of this striving. The server network with about one hundred servers in 24 locations is below the average we’re seeing with VPN providers. But like a true top VPN provider, SaferVPN runs its own network of VPN servers and stays away from leasing servers also in use by other (VPN) companies.

With a smart DNS solution to be released soon and second to none customer service we praised in our review of SaferVPN, this Israeli company is one of the driving forces pushing the VPN scene forward to make the internet open and safe again. In its mission to do this, SaferVPN is putting work into a couple of non-profit initiatives just as admirable as we learned in this interview with the company’s CEO and co-founder Amit Bareket.

Why did you found SaferVPN?

Sagi and I founded SaferVPN because we saw a huge demand for VPN in the market. Nowadays, more than 60 countries have some extent of internet censorship. Yet the internet is such a powerful tool when it comes to freedom of expression, education and connecting with family and friends. We see access to the internet as a basic freedom that everyone should have and this was a driving motivation in our founding of SaferVPN.

Moreover, our VPN service provides a much-needed guarantee of privacy for our users. Even if you do have internet access, many connections are not secure and without a VPN, surfers on the web are subject to infringement on their privacy from hackers and snoopers. So in short, we believe that everyone should not only have access to the web, but also be able to enjoy and use the web safely and without fear or worry.

Can you tell us a bit more about the SaferVPN routers?

How come your number of server locations is somewhat more modest than that of most other VPN providers?

Our approach is unique in the VPN industry – we own, engineer and manage our VPN network – with a focus on reliability, high availability and speed. Other VPN providers often use third party companies to host and manage their VPN servers, but we don’t. We are constantly working on adding new locations, and for every new location, we give a lot of consideration and thought, performing stress tests and making sure we select the best place possible to host our servers.

Yep, it’s already in the works and should be out in just a week or two.

Which new releases, updates may we expect in the near future?

We have some exciting developments based on VPN technology that will allow our users even more accessibility and simplicity than before. We’ve also got a smart DNS solution in the works, coming out soon.

And, along with our technology, we’ll be continuing to expand our work in the realm of freedom of speech and human rights, working together with NGO Advancing Human Rights to allow more dissidents in closed societies access to the free web.

How do you personally use your VPN account?

Personally, I find our VPN most useful when connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots and securing my internet activities. And of course, I don’t mind being able to watch some Parks and Recreation every now and then.

Which advice do you have to protect our privacy, data online other than using a VPN?

As a company, we value freedom and security both online and offline. We currently work with NGOs to provide VPNs to political dissidents, to help them get around autocratic censorships. In fact, we were recently mentioned for this work in New York Times. We believe we have an obligation to help those who aren’t able to speak up and like to do our part in promoting this kind of justice.
