How aware are you of what personal data can be transferred when you access the internet over a VPN? Many internet users believe that with security software installed, and the protection of their device’s operating system, they can avoid their activity being in any way traced online. This is what The Privacy Observer is helping find out. They have set up a short survey – taking no more than two minutes to complete – to inform and educate the public of the privacy advantages, and the limitations, of using a VPN.
Set up by DirectSpark with support by ibVPN, the Privacy Observer is a project with a simple aim: to make more people aware that complete online anonymity is virtually impossible to achieve, and that even the most secure VPN will fall short of logging no user information at all, for a range of complex legal reasons. Their test is a short, simple check of whether your knowledge of online privacy is up to standard. Everyone can take this short anonymous test to help research of online privacy protection.
Their mission is important. A great deal is said in the mainstream media, online and technology press about how you can use the internet without fear of privacy being infringed upon; however, much of this is simply not true. The survey is their contribution to the debate: to inform the public about what a VPN can, and cannot, offer, as well as to cut out confusion in this contentious and controversial area of online privacy.
