How Does Firefox’ Facebook Container Add-on Keep You Safe?

How Does Firefox’ Facebook Container Add-on Keep You Safe?

Facebook is like a memory box: it saves photos, messages, videos, statuses, and updates you on the lives of your friends and family. That is why deleting an account is unthinkable for many. The thought of losing all that information is unbearable, despite the way Facebook is known to mishandle private data. Up until recently, the only way to protect your data against Facebook was to definitively delete your account. However, Mozilla Firefox has come up with an extension for its browser that will help users browse Facebook while still having privacy and guaranteeing that the social media network’s eyes don’t follow you to other websites. This tool is extremely useful in the sense that it will make it impossible for Facebook to use its members’ web activity to send them targeted advertising.

Using Facebook Container is a no-brainer. Installing it will immediately delete the user’s Facebook cookies and log them out to make sure that any saved information will be erased. A new blue colored browser tab will load the next time users try to access the social network. On the user’s side, browsing the website won’t be any different from what they are used to.

In fact, Facebook Container is so safe that clicking on Facebook Share buttons while using other browser tabs will load them within the extension’s tab. However, embedded Facebook comments and Like buttons in tabs outside the Facebook Container will not work. Websites that allow login or account creation through Facebook will also not work properly. Firefox explains that since the extension is “designed to separate Facebook use from use of other websites, this behavior is expected”.

Unfortunately, this extension only works with Firefox and higher on desktop. This means that other browsers, and even Firefox for mobile won’t be able to support Facebook Container. For those who use Facebook on mobile, the best solution is to use a VPN.

Regardless, desktop users shouldn’t rely only on using Facebook Container. What they should do is combine its use with a VPN software. While the former will help escape Facebook’s preying eyes, the truth is most websites nowadays are connected to it. A VPN service will hide the user’s online activity by switching its real IP address with another one at a different location. In addition, all data and browsing will be encrypted so no one will be able to spy on that user’s information. This means that cookies created by websites will be useless as they can’t identify the user who is visiting.

Much has been said about Facebook’s privacy policy and even though the company has managed to right some of its wrongs – such as the inability for a user to delete his or her account without contacting support – the truth is that there is still some gray area when it comes to how the company handles its customers’ data.
