Extending Medical Alert Protection Over the Whole House

Extending Medical Alert Protection Over the Whole House

Medical alert systems are meant to enhance the aging resident’s freedom by providing peace of mind and independence, but in some cases, strangely, the exact opposite is true as seniors are often too afraid to leave the room for fear that their voice won’t reach the base station. Most units are equipped with a large range capable of covering the house and even the garden or the front yard, but this doesn’t mean you’ll hear the monitoring agent’s instructions from two rooms away. This often clips the wings of the senior users, who ultimately give up on the idea of an active life in favor of guaranteed protection. Luckily, there are remedies for this problem.

Voice extenders

Medical alert base stations nowadays are equipped with enhanced two-way communication technology that is refined enough to pick up even the faintest noises from the next room. Still, this is of little comfort for the elderly living in multi-story buildings. For larger residences, the best course of action is to set up voice extenders in key locations of the home. These are optional pieces of tech provided by some companies such as Alert1. A voice extender is basically a speakerphone for two-way communication and can be mounted on a wall or just placed on a flat surface. However, bear in mind that most voice extenders require a connection to power and a landline. Having voice extenders in your home means that emergency operators can reach you in every room. This brings with it not only a greater peace of mind for the residents but also a higher level of freedom since they won’t need to be overly cautious anymore and can gravitate away from the base station.

Mobile help buttons

In spite of their useful nature, voice extenders are becoming more and more outdated because of the increasing popularity of portable medical alert systems. Take Mobile Guardian from Medical Guardian as an example. The slightly larger help button has the base station integrated so it can be carried around with you. It also has a built-in two-way speaker, so you don’t need to worry about voice extenders anymore. The selling point of the mobile button is self-explanatory: you can carry your medical alert system with you anywhere, the button is still small and light enough to shove in your bag or pocket. Medical Guardian’s button is also fitted with GPS tracking, therefore providing invaluable protection when leaving the house. The only setback of the mobile button is its rather hefty price.

All in all, a simpler medical alert system complete with a few voice extenders is a good investment for seniors who find themselves residing in larger buildings, while mobile help buttons are advised for the elderly that are always on the go.
