Everything You Need to Know About Streaming Peacock

As people are cutting the cord and turning to on-demand services, massive networks have been following the trend by launching their own streaming platforms. NBCUniversal is one of such examples, launching Peacock in July 2020. The company provides both free and paid options with over 20,000 hours of content, and you can find both Peacock originals and NBCUniversal popular shows on the platform.

Features

If you’ve already used Netflix, HBO, or Amazon Prime, you won’t have a problem scrolling through Peacock as the platform provides a similar interface to most streaming services. Still, the app offers an original concept by providing a ‘channels’ tab where you can find curated programming for your favorite shows and genres, such as playlists for SNL skits or true crime shows.

When you select a title from the easy-to-use app library, you can read the show’s synopsis, watch the trailer, add it to your watchlist, and check similar titles. On top of this, Peacock also displays titles’ Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience scores, as well as the time left until it leaves the platform.

Peacock content library

Obviously, the quality of a streaming service only goes as far as its content library. If there aren’t any shows worth your time, it doesn’t make sense to subscribe, even if it’s free. Peacock provides shows from TV networks like NBC, Bravo, USA Network, Syfy, Fox, Nickelodeon, and many more. In short, there’s plenty to watch. You’ll find popular shows from NBC’s back-catalog, such as Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and Saturday Night Live. The Office will also be an option, but it only arrives at Peacock in 2021 due to licensing rights.

The story is a bit different when it comes to the movies, though. Most of them are older classics, and all major titles like Jurassic Park and The Matrix expired just one month after the app’s launch. Despite this, new movies are being added as we speak, with blockbusters like E.T. now available in Peacock’s movie library. Even so, it’s still a bit lackluster when compared to the amazing originals other streaming services like HBO provide.

Free vs Paid

As already mentioned, Peacock has the unique feature of allowing you to stream its shows for free. Even though this subscription is ad-supported, meaning you’ll get a few advertisements throughout the show, it’s a nice option for anyone who doesn’t want to spend a dime. That being said, paying for a subscription is still worthwhile since it unlocks over 8,000 hours of content that is unavailable to free users.

There are two different pricing tiers available. For $4.99 per month, you get unlimited access to Peacock’s library, including live sports events like the Premier League and access to new episodes immediately. However, the Premium subscription still includes advertising. In order to get an almost entirely ad-free experience, you have to subscribe to the most expensive plan named Premium Plus ($9.99 per month), although there is still a small amount of programming that contains ads. It’s far from ideal, especially when compared to Netflix’s entry plan, which doesn’t display any ads for $8.99 per month.

Peacock geoblocking

Like most streaming services, Peacock streaming is only available in the countries where the company has the required license rights. In this case, Peacock TV is only available in the U.S., which means you’ll have a hard time reaching the platform from anywhere else. Plans to expand to Europe exist, but it will only be available for people who have a subscription with Sky. Fortunately, VPN services allow you to trick Peacock’s servers into thinking you’re accessing from within the U.S., unblocking all content. So, if you want to access the service outside the U.S., just read our guide explaining how to use a VPN to stream Peacock anywhere in the world.
