It seems that the huge scandal with Cambridge Analyticahas caused some major headaches for Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. He was not only summoned to court several times to testify the company’s part in the shady dealings, but celebrities also started to protest by deleting their personal profiles. Having famous people with millions of fans publicly reject the social media site is a PR blow that most certainly erodes the site’s reputation even further.
Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, was a leading force in the celebrity protest against Facebook’s misconduct of private information. Wozniak criticized the site for not looking after people’s privacy and for getting advertising money in exchange of user data: “With Facebook, you are the product,” said the tech genius.
The popular comedian and film star was among the first to bid farewell to Facebook. Carrey’s departure was a serious blow to the company though, because not only did he sell all of his Facebook stocks but also urged others to follow his example. The actor seemed to have nursed resentment already as he berated the social media site in a tweet for its involvement with the elections. Carrey even shared the popular #unfriendfacebook tag in his farewell tweet.
The CEO of Tesla Inc. left the social media site with a bang. Following the controversy, many people reached out to the ‘Real Iron Man’ on Twitter, daring him to delete the verified Facebook page of SpaceX if he’s a real man. Elon Musk agreed to it in a heartbeat. Apparently he didn’t even know about the existence of the page – a strong indicator of just how lowly the CEO thinks about the site. Musk claimed that he never registered on Facebook nor did the company ever use it for advertising, so leaving wasn’t difficult at all.¬
Jim Carrey wasn’t the only American comedian and actor who threw his Facebook account into the bin. Will Ferrell was also deeply disturbed by the scandal, stating: “I can no longer, in good conscience, use the services of a company that allowed the spread of propaganda and directly aimed it at those most vulnerable.” Interestingly, the comedian shared his thoughts on Facebook, which was deleted afterwards.
The Indian director and actor surprised his Twitter followers with the announcement that he’ll delete his Facebook account. Although he didn’t give a candid reason for doing so, considering the timing it’s quite obvious which event it was that rubbed him the wrong way. Akhtar’s case also highlights the two-faced nature of big-name celebrities, as the director only trashed his personal account and not the fan pages. Whether or not he’ll stay in touch with his followers this way is currently unknown.
Even though the #unfriendfacebook movement is gaining momentum with every celebrity that joins – whether it’s coming from a noble intention or just a fad – it’s important to highlight that simply deleting the account isn’t enough to stay safe from Facebook’s all-seeing eye. For one, the company has extended its privacy settings to allow users to have more control over their personal information and how it’s shared.
It’s even more important to stay under Facebook’s radar by enabling an adblock or even better, installing the equivalent add-on of a reliable VPN provider (one that isn’t available for free) because these tools will encrypt the data stream and stop Facebook’s lackeys from following you. Who knows, advice like this could even come in handy for a celebrity as well.
