Quite the controversial website nowadays, 4chanwas born to the public on October 1st, 2003. Close to celebrating its 13-year anniversary, it can be described as an image-based bulletin board where anyone can comment on and share images anonymously without requiring registration. In short, it works like Reddit with the added feature of having images.
What started to be a Japanese modeled image board is now one of the most popular and expansive websites with a much greater amount of other boards dedicated to a variety of topics; from the classic Japanese manga and anime content to videogames and sports – and even some other less recommendable ones. Nowadays, the 4chan community is known for being one of the responsible ones behind the creation and sharing of the so loved internet memesamong other content.
Thanks to this, as you may know, 4chan is one of the main targets not only for schools, but also for some Wi-Fi network providers, ISPs and legal authorities that are putting more and more effort in blocking its access. Whenever this happens, many will try to use alternative methods to access it, such as VPNs or proxy servers that can unblock the website. Besides, there are also some quite curious tricks that work only for some people – as entities behind such blocks can also be aware of it – which is using Google Translate or Bing Translator as a proxy or adding an “s” to 4chan’s http domain – which we previously covered what it involves.
But if neither of these unblocking tricks work, you will most likely turn to the aforementioned VPN or proxy services to circumvent the geo-block. The problem here is that some websites such as 4chan – or Netflix for instance – are taking a step forward and are able to detect and block access from certain VPNs and proxy servers. In general, you’ll be able to access 4chan with a fairly decent VPN provider but please tread carefully as some can be under affected designated IP addresses blocks. This happens because of the publicly shared IP addresses that can be easily found and blocked – which is the case of HideMyAss for example. Besides, a certain number of ISPs, IP ranges, and countries are disallowed by 4chan from posting. These blocks are related with previous repeated abuse coming from selected VPN providers, which is for example the case with some PIA (Private Internet Access) IP addresses. A quality VPN company like Private Internet Access that has a large userbase will work on making IP addresses available that aren’t blocked by selected sites like 4chan. Whereas smaller-scale VPN providers may not bother making sure its service works with selected websites.
