A part of the Rakuten Group, Viki is a global streaming service with nearly 40 million users worldwide. This streaming website features content from eleven countries: China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the U.S., Bangladesh, Canada, Hong Kong, Philippines, and the United Kingdom. However, Asian content is the most dominant across the platform.
Even though there are paid subscription plans available, users don’t really have to pay for a subscription, as Viki provides free content with ads in SD quality through its multi-device platform. The service can be accessed through Viki’s website or through smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, Amazon Kindle Fire, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, and Roku. Rooted and jailbroken devices, however, are not supported. As a streaming service, some content may be geographically restricted. In those cases, viewers should be ready to use a VPN service so that they can overcome this block.
What makes Viki an interesting service is the fact that it allows viewers to be a part of it. Content is made available on the platform and can then be subtitled by community volunteers, under a Creative Commons license. This makes for the impressive figure of over one billion subtitles translated across 200 languages. Additionally, besides providing series and films from over eleven countries, Viki also features Viki Originals, such as Tong, Memories, Spark, Girl’s War, Fortuneteller’s Secret Recipe, Welcome to Waikiki, and many more. The best part is that users don’t have to buy a subscription to enjoy this entertainment.
As mentioned, the service is free with ads and SD quality. However, for those who want to enjoy their favorite movies without ads and in HD quality, two additional paid subscriptions are available from as low as $4.17 or $8.33 per month. The only difference between these two plans is that the latter gives early access to select hits available in the client’s region and films. For customers who acquire the latter plan, using a VPN service might be extremely beneficial. By switching the real IP’s location with another from a location picked by the user, the VPN can provide early access to the user’s favorite shows, even if they’re not part of the hit list in his or her true location.
Because it is a global streaming service, users everywhere should be able to watch Viki’s content. However, this provider works on a license-basis, which means that some series or films may not be available in certain geographical areas. Unfortunately, Viki does not have a section on its website where customers can check which content is blocked and where it is blocked. The only way to know if a certain series is restricted in your region is by trying to stream it. If that’s the case, then an error message informing you that the content isn’t available will appear.
One of the reasons why Viki may have adopted this procedure is to avoid the use of VPN software to circumvent regional restrictions. Therefore, while users can still use a VPN service to watch Viki, it’s not guaranteed that they will be able to access all their favorite films and series in the same country location.
