Best VPNs for Chile

Best VPNs for Chile

By Leo S.Leo S. Verified by Adam B.Adam B. Last updated: August 3, 2024 (0)

There are few places on Earth like Chile, the South American country where skyscrapers and natural wonders merge together as two sides of the same coin. The capital Santiago de Chile is the best illustration of this, as the country’s richest and most developed city shares its border with the Andes – the longest continental mountain range in the world – in a beautiful landscape worthy of a postcard. Likewise, the wild nature of Patagonian Chile, the imposing volcano with the surrounding lakes in Pucón, and of course Easter Island are only some of the strongest tourist attractions.

And if you’re planning a trip there, then all this gets even better when considering that the country is a free state, which includes in the internet since very few things are restrained or inaccessibleFreedom House has also recognized the country’s efforts and changed its status to ‘free’ in 2016.

Using a Chilean IP

Because much of Chile is shaped by nature, the internet penetration rate is lower than you might expect at only 64%. However, it’s still possible to get a fiber optic high-speed connection at acceptable prices and the overall state of the internet is considered to be good. But the best news is that – other than torrenting – all internet activities are permitted since the government doesn’t censor or block any pages, forums or social media. As is to be expected, anything illegal nature – such as child pornography – is obviously tackled by a special police branch.

In practical terms, this means all Chilean IP addresses can access Facebook and Twitter without any problems, use Skype and WhatsApp for text messages and calls, and subscribe to streaming services such as Netflix.

Chile online privacy laws

Not only is Chile great in providing access to a free and open internet but it’s also an example for when it comes to protecting their citizens from ISPs, too. Questions such as net neutrality have been under the spotlight for quite some time, but Chile was the first country in the world to preserve it back in 2010. With a slight amendment to the country’s telecommunications law already in place, the National Congress of Chile forced ISPs to offer internet access without any service restrictions based on the type of subscription plan. In other words, they are forbidden from blocking, interfering or restricting the users’ right to use any legal content on the internet, including apps and services.

In addition, personal data can only be collected and shared with third parties when authorized by the user.

Internet censorship in Chile

There is no such thing as internet censorship in Chile, which is great news for residents and tourists alike. Freedom House’s report states that “unlike most other countries in the region, journalists face low levels of violence, intimidation, and harassment” and this also applies to the internet, where everyone is free to express their view on any subject either on social media, blogs or private websites.

There are also no penalties for anyone using the internet and even content streaming is legal, though those taking part in illegal activities such as torrenting are likely to face the corresponding sentences. Many regular torrenters in Chile have resorted to VPNs to hide this practice from their ISPs, benefiting from the fact that such services are also legal in the country. However, hiding it doesn’t make it legal and so VPNs shouldn’t be used for this matter.

Streaming services in Chile

Ever since it first saw the light of day, Netflix has become very popular and it didn’t take very long to go global. The red N reached Chile a while ago, replete with a library of thousands of TV shows and movies – though the numbers here don’t reach even half of what is available in the U.S. As such, given the country’s decent internet speeds and its close proximity to America, a VPN might be a good investment to enjoy some of the latest titles that aren’t available in Chile.

But it’s not only movies and TV series that are popular. It’s impossible to talk about streaming in Chile without mentioning soccer given the recent success of the national team in previous competitions. This is the country’s most popular sport and because of that some Chilean services like Fanatiz have emerged in the country, offering HD streaming subscriptions of matches from both national and international leagues with an admittedly bigger focus on South American matches.

When it comes to music, however, Spotify, Apple Music and all the biggest international services are available in the country without restrictions, and they each accept subscriptions from Chilean IP addresses.

Free Chile VPN trials

HideMyAss

Of all the South American countries, Uruguay is one of the hardest to find a VPN server for on different companies’ networks. However, HideMyAss offers thousands of locations in almost 200 countries, which makes it the go-to provider when looking for complete world coverage. There are a couple of servers in Uruguay and their decent speeds and unlimited bandwidth make them perfect for uninterrupted HD streaming across multiple screens. And since HMA provides a 30-day free trial it is perfect to test the whole service first.

ExpressVPN

Chile is a country that doesn’t appear in VPN server lists too often, so those that want to specifically change their virtual location to this country should opt for HideMyAss. This is one of the most complete providers since it offers nearly 200 countries, many of them being exclusively owned by the company even. On top of fast, consistent speeds that make it perfect for streaming, HideMyAss also includes unlimited bandwidth, support for multiple simultaneous connections and a 30-day free trial.

CyberGhost

Though CyberGhost is still not the most well-known provider, purchasing a subscription is a sure investment in a VPN that has huge potential. The world is yet to be conquered, but a big part of it – more than 60 countries in fact – has already been painted with the colors of the company, which includes Chile, where CyberGhost actually has more servers than the two previous competitors. In addition, the company has one of the best looking clients, suitable for every user’s needs, and because it supports seven simultaneous connections it can be configured to run on multiple devices for high-quality streaming and security. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.
