Privacy may be VPNTunnel’s core objective but one of its greatest strengths is the ease of use. Using the applications can have new users logging on to a VPN within seconds and all interfaces are simple and easy to understand. Anyone who does struggle will find some crystal-clear configuration guides online.

For those who use VPNs mostly for downloading and streaming there is a lot to love about VPNTunnel, such as there being no download limits at all. Although some servers aren’t available to use with torrents, they are flagged up as such on the server list. You’ll also find servers designed for use with Netflix US and BBC iPlayer, but we’ve found that all streaming works very well. VPNTunnel’s users are also not limited by their devices with five simultaneous connections allowed for each account.

Easy-to-use app

We weren’t able to test VPNTunnel’s Windows desktop application and without one dedicated to Macs we instead tried out the Android mobile app. It was basic in features but was incredibly user-friendly and we found ourselves connecting to a network in seconds. That’s not to say that there isn’t any depth to VPNTunnel, users who prefer their own custom set ups will be able to do so – the handy online guides will walk you through the process step by step.

VPN network

VPNTunnel has a network made up of 800 servers located in 35 countries, which is about average for most VPN services. The vast majority of the servers are based in North America and Western Europe and a selection come from the rest of the world but there are none based in Africa. Some servers are made especially for the use of iPlayer and there are two dedicated US servers for Netflix. File sharing over torrents is allowed with some servers and not with others, you can see on the server list on the account page which aren’t.

The speed of the servers VPNTunnel has available varies in quality and if you’re looking for the fastest one then you may find yourself jumping around between a few to find the best option. We tested from within Europe and found mixed results. The UK BBC iPlayer server gave excellent speeds so watching your favorite shows shouldn’t be an issue. The other European servers are more inconsistent, for example we had a relatively slow speed from Luxembourg, and we found similar results with other nearby servers that we tried.

A great result came from one of VPNTunnel’s dedicated US Netflix servers, with a much faster result even than the more local iPlayer server. Some servers leave a lot to be desired and this is especially true with the Asia-based ones – we found the Tokyo server to be painfully slow every time we tried it. Users can run their own speed tests for each location on the VPNTunnel website, and although the results from our own tests vary somewhat, they can be used as a handy estimate before you choose your network.

Privacy protection

As you would expect from a company like Edelino Commerce that prides itself on privacy, VPNTunnel is very good at keeping your data safe. Data logs, connection logs, and private data are never stored on its networks – only your e-mail, payment data, and Google Analytics data will be stored. Pay for your subscription with one of the many cryptocurrencies accepted and you’ll be reducing your online footprint even more. It isn’t perfect though, taking a look through the privacy policy we see that in the event of the company being acquired by a third party, the personal data it holds would be transferred as well.

For users’ security needs, VPNTunnel uses AES-256 encryption – the industry standard for any VPN out there and you get a new IP address every time you log on. However, VPNTunnel is missing a kill switch on its Android and iOS apps and the Windows version requires the user to set one up themselves.

VPNTunnel supports most major operating systems with a few minor exceptions. All the big hitters are there – Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android are all supported as are Linux Ubuntu, Apple TV, Chromebook, Playstation and Xbox. With the option to add the five simultaneous devices, you can run your household through VPNTunnel.

However, VPNTunnel only has applications for Windows, Android, and iOS. Although there isn’t a macOS application on the horizon, Mac users can navigate the manual configuration guides easily, but they won’t enjoy the same functionality as other users will. Indeed, if you are a Mac user you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.

We used the Android application and found it to be simply designed and incredibly easy to use. After logging in to your account you’re two simple clicks away from logging on to a VPN. From the app you can also access the occasionally manned live customer service chat and your account details but there are little in the way of mobile features.

Pricing

Compared to its competitors, VPNTunnel is one of the cheaper services on the market. Using the usual three-plan offer, the cheapest available plan comes to just $2.99 a month. There are other cheaper options out there but more often than not they require a larger commitment in subscription time, sometimes even multiple years.

That $2.99 deal is only available through the 12-month subscription. Besides that, you can get a month by month plan costing a fairly standard $9.99 and three months saving a third of that at $6.66. Unlike some other services, VPNTunnel doesn’t hide anything behind a Premium account, with all features available to all users.

Unfortunately, there is no free trial for VPNTunnel like with many services. However, if you’re not completely sold on the service there is a seven-day money-back guarantee which is quite a short trial period compared to others available. VPNTunnel accepts the usual payments, all the major credit card companies and PayPal as to be expected. One big positive is that subscriptions can also be paid for with cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin being just one of 15+ major cryptocurrencies that VPNTunnel currently supports.

With some improvements VPNTunnel would be one of the best on the market but right now it does exactly what it sets out to do, keeps you safe, secure, and private online all at a great price.
