VPNGhost can be described as an old-fashioned VPN company that makes use of its wisdom to turn you into a real internet ghost, making you surf at will while hidden from the online world and the company itself. Providing a notable service, it will allow you to circumvent and access all types of geo-blocked content, assuring that you remain protected with solid encryption protecting your data. Featuring a small but steady server network with quite decent speeds and extra features that we don’t see being offered so often, this can well be a first-line VPN service, only with a few items to be polished in order to reach even higher ground. The company allows a free account for unlimited time with the catch of only getting access to one lone server. Although, coupons are often offered and subscription prices are breaths of fresh air in an already packed VPN market.

While looking for a VPN provider that can completely fulfill your online privacy needs, you have to focus on what unique features such provider can offer for the lowest price. This seems common sense but what we mean is that VPNGhost does things a little differently from other companies. In fact, you need a bit of digging time on the website in order to fully apprehend what is being offered to you as some features are not flashing in fluorescent lights right in front of you. In fact, the more you search the happier you’ll get with their service.

No Desktop Client

This is what you’ll notice first, as VPNGhost does things the good old-fashioned way, this is; you have to download the OpenVPN client for your device and then move to your VPNGhost account again to download the keys. This can be considered a two-edged knife. On the one hand, it is a step back regarding what other VPN providers are doing, offering fully responsive desktop clients that can be installed and set to run in no time. On the other hand, it compels the company to offer a better setup guide and assistance, since manual installation is the only option and some technical knowledge is strongly advised. Regarding this, VPNGhost surely delivers enough help for you to set everything accurately.

Free proxy server and DNS leaking prevention

These are two features that you’ll need to dig for a little bit to find out if they’re actually offered. These two are much-welcomed advantages that can make us rely on VPNGhost’s service and that will surely be put to good use. We found out that the free proxy server is located in the Netherlands, a stellar location considering the favorable internet and privacy laws in this country. The DNS leaking prevention can be accessed by following the setup guide on the forum that contains proper explanations on how to copy an IPv4 DNS (IPv6 is not supported). From this moment on, following the video or images guide will grant you the most accurate DNS leaking free setup.

VPN network

To be honest, VPNGhost has one of the smallest VPN server networks we’ve seen but it doesn’t throw the company out of competition since these are enough to assure worldwide coverage, only lacking servers in African and South American territory. With this being said, the company currently holds 18 server locations in 16 different countries, with the U.S. and Canada having two server locations each, and Central-American Mexico is also featured on the list.

VPNGhost Server Status Account Settings

This is one of those cases that can be considered as a company playing safe as VPNGhost has few but good servers. In fact, despite the fairly little server network, worldwide speeds are actually quite good, even overcoming bigger companies with hundreds of worldwide servers. Upon testing four locations across the globe’s main regions – North America, Asia, Europe and Australia – both download and upload speeds were always stable and beyond acceptable, although in some cases ping was also fairly high.

The company allows torrenting on some specific P2P servers – like the Bulgarian one – although it forbids you to do so while connecting to a North American, Mexican or UK server as causing the company to receive a DMCA/copyright infringement claim will result in your account being suspended indefinitely.

Privacy protection

Privacy is one of the strong points of VPNGhost and the truth is we cannot point any major flaws except protocol support. The company advertises its no-log policy assuring that, even if requested by major instances like a court or the government, they have nothing to hand over so one can figure they are being dead serious about this.

Upon visiting the extremely short and concise privacy policy page for details, we found out that what is stored, though, is some of your personal information upon the choice of the plan and your payment details. However, if you wish to remain fully anonymous, VPNGhost allows you payment methods such as Bitcoin or Litecoin via Tor browser as encouraged by the company itself.

Regarding your traffic, you have nothing to worry about since everything will be encrypted using the strong 4096 DH AES 256-bit encryption. As aforementioned, protocol use is obviously limited to OpenVPN, since the VPN service needs to be set up through the OpenVPN client. OpenVPN is the best choice in terms of VPN protocols and is most widely used, although it would be nice to be able to choose among others.

This is where VPNGhost scores the most points, as the lack of a proper desktop client forces the company to provide a pretty much perfectly accurate setup guide for each device, and they surely deliver with ease. In fact, there are dedicated step-by-step guides with images for all devices supported. After you’ve logged into your account you’ll have the guides in your “personal” area and by clicking on them you’ll be redirected to VPNGhost’s forum (that you can access anytime for free without an account). Mac, iOS, Android, Linux and Synology all feature on the list of supported devices, but only Windows has the right to its own installation support video also featuring the DNS leaking prevention manual setup. More setup video guides for the other operating systems are, according to VPNGhost’s forum, coming soon.

If you use VPNGhost on a free account you will have very limited access to the server network. As a free user you’re also allowed just one connection per account while paid subscriptions can enjoy VPN protection on a (better-but-still-short) two simultaneous connections under the same account.

Pricing

Pricing is always that dangerous and sensitive aspect that can easily gain or lose clients. Fortunately, we face a VPN provider that knows how to please its users with a good pricing policy. VPNGhost has 3 different types of subscription plans where the only thing changing is the duration of the subscription. That’s right, all plans give you access to the complete set of features, which is always a decision that we stand up for since you don’t require extra payments to access that one little option that you may need. With this being said, for the lowest price of $2.95/month you get access to the full server network, including P2P servers, unlimited bandwidth and device switches, two simultaneous connections and the standard OpenVPN protocol.

There are monthly, semiannual and yearly plans and the longer your subscription period, the bigger discount you get. The costs vary from $7.95 for single monthly payments, $29.70 for semiannual bills – something like $4.95 per month – and the best deal offered: $35.40 billed yearly which translates to only $2.95 per month. This represents an over 60% discount in comparison to single monthly payments and puts VPNGhost among the more affordable VPN solutions in the market at the moment.

VPN Pricing

To start enjoying VPN protection for the most affordable price you can pay using PayPal, Bitcoin and the rarely seen Litecoin trough Tor browser for increased anonymity. You can get direct access to a Tor browser via VPNGhost’s FAQ page. You can also use coupons as promotional codes are often distributed. The only downside to all this is that, unfortunately, the company has a no refund policy.

Customer service

Only when we thought the service wouldn’t get any better it is time to check for customer service and, as we pleasantly found out, VPNGhost is present – and quite active – on Facebook and Twitter where you can find the latest updates and have your questions kindly answered. If this is not enough, you can also check their less active Instagram account. Regarding the more traditional contacting methods, there is a 24/7 ticket system for when the live chat is offline, since this only available during work hours and, for geographical incompatibilities that you may or may not share, we never found it online. Besides this, there is also a very useful FAQ page that, as we mentioned earlier, can have a few hidden pearls and has helpful detailed information that covers pretty much all software. Last but not least, VPNGhost’s forum is also very useful either for setup tutorial checking, question answering and user sharing information.

Bottom line

To conclude, VPNGhost is a provider that is clearly closer to the top than to the bottom of the extensive VPN services list. In fact, we were impressed by many aspects such as the server speeds – which are indeed quite fast and stable even in those locations that suffer with high ping and are farther away – and other useful sides of the software such as the DNS leaking prevention fix, free web proxy, very attractive prices among others facets. Although we cannot help thinking it could be far greater if certain aspects were polished. As the main one we have to highlight the required manual setup, as there is a lack of native desktop clients. By providing an app, at the very least one for computers, that is quick to install and easy to use – with the added feature of allowing protocol choice – is a notorious advantage. The lack of it represents a hard first contact with the provider regardless of, as we highlight, that contact becoming smoother with helpful setup guides and other features offered.
