Sometimes we delete a file by mistake. Other times, our devices fail us by malfunctioning without notice. Whatever the reason, there’s always a point where we need to restore a deleted file. In the past, users were forced to use expensive services where they had to pay up front without any guarantee their data would be restored. Nowadays, it’s possible to download a piece of software and do it yourself in the comfort of your home and ask for a refund if it doesn’t work. Tenorshare UltData is one of those programs that makes the process of recovering deleted files so easy that anyone can do it. The company advertises that it only takes three easy steps to restore data, and they’re not lying. Of course, finding deleted files and restoring them to a fully working state are two different things. That’s why we tested UltData several times to understand how reliable this data recovery software is. Tenorshare’s price is pretty affordable, and there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee in place.

Tenorshare UltData is simple data recovery software that prefers to stick with the basics to make it as easy as possible to restore deleted files so that even people without strong IT skills can do it. Unfortunately, such simplicity comes at the cost of not providing as many features as other players on the market.

Don’t let the lack of utilities fool you: Tenorshare UltData is capable of recovering over 550 file types, including emails, images, audio files, videos, and documents. Furthermore, it supports all the popular file systems such as FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT.

The recovering software also supports all types of drives, identifying external sources automatically. Some of the devices that users can restore files from with Tenorshare UltData are internal and external hard drives, CD/DVDs, flash drives, and memory cards.

While Tenorshare UltData offers both quick and deep scans, it’s a bummer that the software doesn’t enable the user to select which one to use right from the start. Instead, Tenorshare UltData always runs a quick scan first. If the user can’t find the required files, they can ask the software to run a deep scan right away. There’s also the problem of not having the option to halt the scanning process and continue it at a later time. The quick scan only takes a couple of minutes, but considering that deep scans can take several hours, it would be nice to have this feature.

Using the PC while UltData is running in the background is not an issue, though. The recovering program is very light CPU- and memory-wise. There’s also a timer on the top of the software window indicating the time remaining to complete the scan. It was pretty accurate regarding the time spent deep-scanning our computer, but the same can’t be said about the quick scan. The timer said it would take a couple of hours when in reality it took around 10 minutes.

While scanning, UltData displays all the files recovered so far. If the user finds the data needed, they can pause the scanning process and restore the file right away.

A data recovery program can be the best scanner in the world, but it’s worthless if it doesn’t restore any of the files found. With this in mind, we did a couple of tests to confirm that UltData delivers what the company promises, and we got mixed results.

First, we tested whether the quick scan was able to find our test folder after a day of deletion – it wasn’t. Moreover, most information we got from a scan was corrupted and impossible to use after restoration. Unfortunately, the story repeated itself when we ran the deep scan. UltData was able to find over 1,500 files, but not the ones we deleted as a test. This was strange, since the ones we deleted were way more recent than some of the files found by the software. We recovered some of the data, but again most of the files were corrupted and programs such as Word or VLC weren’t able to open them. On the bright side, UltData makes it easy to scroll through the files by displaying their thumbnails or a small preview of the data.

Even with that failed attempt, we still tried to recover the same files after a week had passed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, neither the quick nor the deep scan were able to find them. However, it worked like a charm with our external drive even after a week of deleting the data. UltData was able to find all files, display their names, and put them back into their original file paths. What’s more, all the restored data was 100% functional.

The price for having such straightforward recovery software is that it doesn’t offer any of the utilities found in more comprehensive competitors. However, this doesn’t mean Tenorshare doesn’t offer other products to complement UltData.

Besides having separate data recovery software for macOS, iOS, and Android, Tenorshare also provides several pieces of software to help with other problems. There are system repair apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and iTunes; data transfer software, including an iOS backup tool; phone to phone transfer and WhatsApp transfer; and password unlockers for iOS and Android.

Pricing

Users can scan their computers with Tenorshare UltData for free and ensure the software is able to find the required files. However, to recover data a paid subscription is necessary. Tenorshare pricing strategy is pretty straightforward, and regardless of the price plan chosen users will have access to the full extent of the software as well as lifetime free updates.

Regular licenses can only be activated on one device. A monthly subscription costs $45.95, but it’s more affordable to commit to a yearly plan since this drops the price to $5 per month, or to get a lifetime license at $89.95 that can be used on up to five computers. Speaking about multiple devices, the yearly plan can be customized to work on multiple computers, where the more licenses purchased, the cheaper each unit becomes. There is no free trial for the paid plans, but there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee in place.

Even though Tenorshare UltData is simple to use, this doesn’t mean that users won’t have any problems while using the software. That’s why Tenorshare works 24/7 to ensure no customer queries are left unnoticed. There’s no live chat on the website, but it’s possible to contact the company by email or through its social media profiles on Twitter and Facebook. However, before reaching out to the customer service team we advise you to check the FAQ page first. Besides having general information about all products provided by Tenorshare, there are also guides explaining how to recover data from specific programs, as well as information regarding registration and billing issues.

Bottom line

Using Tenorshare UltData is as easy as 1-2-3, but it’s aggravating that it didn’t actually recover any of the required files, making it too unreliable for us to recommend. This is disappointing because the software shows a lot of potential overall. UltData scans and recovers files at a blazing speed, taking around one minute to restore 1GB worth of data, and it’s effortless to scroll though the detected files. But considering that quick scans were only able to recover files deleted on the same day and most restored data was corrupted, its speed becomes immaterial. On the bright side, the quick scan detected and fully restored all files that had been deleted from our pen drive over a week before. Nevertheless, taking into account UltData’s affordable price and the 30-day money-back guarantee, it can be an application to try out and see if it’s able to recover your deleted files.

  1. Horrible experiencia. Te obligan a pagar una suscripción renovable anualmente, pero cuando cancelas la suscripción te dicen que no han recibido el mensaje. Total, que pagas sí o sí dos años, aunque solo lo hayas usado una vez. Y además, a mi no me funciona. RECOMIENDO NO COMPRARLO

    1. Hi Javier, thank you for leaving a review for Tenorshare UltData for Windows. Please could you tell us a bit more about the billing option you signed up for? The company don’t run a 2-year billing cycle, and there are also free and monthly options, so it’s a shame that you were charged for more time than you wanted to pay for. Thank you and have a good day 🙂
