Smart Mac Care is easy to use and as soon as you open the program, a quick scan will automatically run, searching for adware, malware, unnecessary junk, and any potential privacy issues with your browsers.

There are tabs at the top of the application, including one for web protection status, although this is nothing more than an advertisement for an ad blocking extension called StopAll Ads. This extension just so happens to be made by Tweaking Technologies, a company that shares the same CEO as Smart Mac Care developers Systweak. This tab will also ignore any superior ad blockers you already have installed or any other privacy add-ons, to encourage you to download StopAll Ads instead.

The advanced tools tab is where you find most of the optimization features. The uninstaller, login items, duplicate file finder, and more are all found here and they’re all straightforward for any new users. Finally, Smart Mac Care also sits in your taskbar and from there you can optimize your Mac memory and perform a quick clean.

We must mention one thing we found particularly bothersome about using Smart Mac Clean, every day we were given a new unwanted advertisement for another of Systweak’s products. For the most part, these products have the exact same functions as Smart Mac Care anyway, making it feel predatory to those without sufficient technical knowledge to see the similarities between them.

Smart Mac Care offers two types of malware scans, a quick scan or you can choose a deeper scan, which obviously takes a little longer. The database of malware and spyware is updated regularly to keep your system protected from all the latest threats. Aside from choosing between a quick or deep scan, there isn’t a lot of customization on offer, and no way to scan particular files or folders.

The junk scan will get rid of your caches, logs, and trash. Smart Mac Care lets you see what files will be erased but doesn’t give you the option to keep particular files, so it’s advised that you thoroughly check your junk scan results before proceeding. Finally, there’s the memory optimizer which will free up RAM that should have your Mac running faster than before.

There are plenty of extra helpful functions that will also help boost your Mac’s performance. The uninstaller will get rid of any unwanted programs much more thoroughly than sending them to the trash yourself. One thing that Smart Mac Care isn’t able to do, that some of its rivals can, is delete those unwanted apps that come preinstalled on your computer and are never used.

The duplicate finder tab allows you to search your computer for any files that may be superfluous, and you can remove them from there. Disk usage allows you to sort your files by type, allowing you to easily discover larger files that might be taking up too much space. It would be more helpful if Smart Mac Cleaner allowed you to sort those files by size as currently you have to go through them individually. There are other utilities too like the login items adjuster, failed downloads finder, and cache clearing for Flash and iTunes.

Smart Mac Care has a simple pricing structure, $69.95 for a year’s worth of protection. However, every time you access the payment page you’ll be greeted with a “limited” offer, that reduces the price to $49.95 which is about 29% discount. The offer isn’t very limited, you’re told to “act now!” before the offer expires the following day, although we tested it three days in a row and found the offer never disappeared.

There is a free version of Smart Mac Care available, and it will do the job for at least one scan before subsequently encouraging you to fork out for the full version. However, it is well worth using this before committing, as it’s likely that upon uninstalling the free version you’ll be given a chance to buy for Smart Mac Care half price, reducing the price to a far more reasonable $24.97 for your first year.
