Should You Get a Fall Detection Emergency Button?

Should You Get a Fall Detection Emergency Button?

Each year, one in three elderly aged 65 or older will suffer a fall, but less than half of them will discuss this with their healthcare provider. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among seniors. After a fall, a senior may be disoriented, in severe pain or even unconscious. They may not be able to call for help. It is not unheard of for seniors to remain on the floor for hours after a fall because they were unable to call for aid. If you are concerned about a loved one being able to get help quickly after a fall, a fall detection emergency button may be the solution you need.

How do fall detection emergency buttons work?

A fall detection emergency button goes beyond a basic medical alert system, and is specifically designed to send a call for help when the button is pushed after a fall. The top fall detection buttons are even designed to send out the alert if it detects a fall and the button is not pushed. There are three main parts to a fall detection emergency button set – the communicator or base station, the emergency button and 24/hour access to a response center.

The communicator or base station is either attached to the main home phone line or wirelessly connected over cellular networks. It acts as a speakerphone and your loved one can use it to speak to someone at the response center with the push of a button. The trained operators at the response center can check in on the situation and contact emergency services if necessary. In non-emergency cases, they can also contact family members or neighbors.

A fall detection button is designed to be worn comfortably as a pendant or bracelet so that your loved one is always protected. This makes it superior to a cell phone, which may be out of reach when a fall occurs. They are also available in waterproof models that can be worn while bathing. This is especially an important feature when you consider that a majority of falls occur in the bathroom.

Pros and cons of a fall detection alert button

The main benefit to a fall detection emergency button is that it provides peace of mind, as it allows loved ones to get help quickly if the senior falls. With systems that automatically detect falls, help can be on its way even if your loved one is unable to push the button and summon it. The main drawback to fall detection pendants for some people is the higher monthly cost compared to classic medical alert jewelry, with most companies it costs between $10-$15 per month more than the traditional alert button. However, can you really put a price on the absolute safety of your loved ones?
