PC Registry Shield aims to be easy to use, thus it provides a wide list of features, but omitting the over the top or unnecessary ones. Starting from the free trial, you can choose what you want to scan with the software; if you use the default settings, PC Registry Shield will scan pretty much everything. After each scanning you can either manually choose up to 10 issues or let the program decide which ones should be axed. However, it is the paid subscription version that unleashes PC Registry Shield’s full potential. From then on you can perform a bunch of other tasks like registry defragmentation and get rid of all corrupt registry entries, system files, missing DLLs and hidden operating system errors.

The startup manager is not that different from the solutions of other registry cleaning providers. In PC Registry Shield’s own version you can see what programs are slowing down the booting process and choose those you want to disable. On the settings page you can determine which areas will be affected by the scans. Furthermore, you can also create a list of issues to be omitted by scans, as well as schedule them or enable PC Registry Shield to perform scans at Windows startup.

Scanning is the feature that always depends on the type and number of threats – but not with PC Registry Shield. In fact, this is one of the fastest scanning programs: during our test, it took less than a minute for the software to find 1642 issues on the PC the program was installed on. No matter how many times we repeated the process, scan areas remained untouched and all tests listed the same amount of issues. To our surprise, each scanning is concluded by a female voice informing you that you can proceed to fix the issues. This feature is much appreciated, especially if you’re running the scan in the background. However, if you are annoyed by the voice (or you don’t want to get busted by your loved one) this feature can be easily turned off in the settings.

If you have the free version, you can delete only 10 threats in two ways: either by letting the program choose them from the threat list or by picking them yourself. When we switched to the paid version to get rid of the 1,600 threats of the test computer, the wiping process took more than two minutes. Compared to the superfast scanning this is quite the slowdown, but it has a very good reason to be this slow: during fixing, restore points are created to ensure customers can return to previous saves should anything go haywire.

The program also provides log details you can check (and export if necessary) before fixing the errors and manually choose what you want to delete. You might think this is unnecessary, but trust us: this little lifesaver feature is one of the most effective ways of preventing any potential important data loss. Regardless, you can always go back to the aforementioned restore points if you accidentally clean the wrong file, which is something you have to be prepared for when messing with a computer’s registry. Although registry defragmentation cannot be canceled once it is on, you have the option to return to previous configurations any time.

Unfortunately the only way of directly contacting PC Registry Shield’s customer support is via e-mail. Regardless of that, Shield Apps is present on LinkedIn and Facebook, but the latter is only updated once a week or less. As for Twitter and Google+, you can ignore them: these social media networks don’t exist in PC Registry Shield’s world, plus clicking on them redirect you to the Shield Apps products page.

Their blog is not that big of a deal either: it only features a couple of news updates and how-to guides. Therefore, if you need help regarding a not urgent matter, you should turn to the short but pretty concise FAQ page.

If we want to nitpick, the only con of PC Registry Shield is the fact that it is a Windows exclusive program. But aside from that, and the quite disappointing customer service, this registry cleaning provider is a strong contender with an easy to use client that goes straight to the point. You can choose what to scan and have access to the error log, with the ability to export it if needed. You are allowed to choose precisely what you want to delete without overflowing your screen with superfluous information. The option to restore any log is a true lifesaver and choosing a scheduled scan is an extra that cannot be always found in better-known registry cleaners either. And to put the cherry on the top, all of the above, alongside the registry defragmentation option and the startup manager, work together to achieve one goal: improve your computer’s overall performance.
