Newly Found Vulnerabilities In Airplay Protocol Threaten Apple Users

In April 2025, Oligo Security Research, a cybersecurity company, published a research paper that confirmed the existence of vulnerabilities within Apple’s AirPlay Protocol and the AirPlay Software Development Kit (SDK).

The vulnerabilities, named Airborne, allow bad actors to exploit multiple attack vectors, including Remote Code Execution (RCE), Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, and Denial of Service (DoS). In the meantime, Apple released an update to address these issues and urged its users to update their devices.

According to Oligo Security Research, the cybersecurity threats associated with the discovered Airborne vulnerabilities include taking control of devices, spreading malware, and allowing further exploitation with supply-chain attacks and ransomware.

The affected devices include:

  • AirPlay-enabled speakers
  • CarPlay devices
  • Apple devices, such as Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV
  • Third-party devices that leverage the AirPlay SDK

Following the discovery of Oligo Security Research, Apple developed and released a security patch to remove all vulnerabilities, recommending that all users update their devices immediately. Apple devices running outdated software versions are at risk of being breached.

Mac security

Apple devices are generally perceived as secure, primarily due to the company’s strict control over its ecosystem and reliable update management. However, the recent discovery of Airborne vulnerabilities, which Apple quickly addressed, created a small window of opportunity for bad actors to exploit them.

Mac devices are among the affected devices, and since many users and companies fail to update their systems regularly, they’re always at risk. Nonetheless, even with updated systems, no protection is guaranteed during those small windows of opportunity. One way to worry less about these is to consider reviewing additional Mac security software to protect your devices further. They can provide extra security and peace of mind about being hacked.
