When speaking about medical alert systems, the wearable button is the most emphasized feature. Wall buttons operate on the same basis as the normal buttons, but they can be easily attached to any surface, not to mention their increased size, which serves the reachability. It’s not hard to figure out the usefulness of wall buttons. Even though it’s stated that the wearable buttons are waterproof, elderly dislike the idea to keep it on while showering. This makes them vulnerable in the bathroom, even though it’s the most dangerous part in the whole house. One quick slide and seniors fall on the ground, unable to reach for their button. This is where the wall buttons come in. If they are installed in lower positions, then they could be pushed without struggling to get up. This allows elders to save energy and summon help without doing risky moves.
Wall buttons work the best if they are used in conjunction with wearable buttons. These just need to be set up in places where there’s an increased risk for falling, like the bathroom, stairs, cellar etc. And you don’t need to decorate the whole room with them: simply place them in strategic positions that are easily accessible from any part of the floor. They are also water proof, so don’t hesitate to use them on a spot that is frequently sprinkled. The most important thing is to locate places that regularly get wet.
Some people also put wall buttons to empty hallways, where no tangible item is located. Putting one to the side of a bed is also a good idea. People sometimes misjudge the distance, and end on the floor. In times like these, it’s good to know what to push for help. This kind of solution won’t substitute the medical alert button, but it makes a good plan B for elders who put their button in the drawer, saying “I don’t need this”.
