In the past few years we’ve witnessed that Medical Guardian strives to be a leading innovator in the field of personal emergency response systems, aiming to help seniors keep their independence without compromising their safety. Their latest development yielded a brand new system, called Family Guardian, that promises caregivers and family members a more in-depth look into the protected elderly’s life. Next to the standard equipment comprising of a base station and two help buttons, the Family Guardian system also presents a door contact sensor and two activity sensors, which can be easily mounted on a wall thanks to their stick and peel nature. The main purpose of the three monitoring units is to keep track on the elderly resident’s daily habits, and receive frequent reports on the senior’s activity.
The idea behind the Family Guardian monitoring system is to set up the sensors in key places in the senior’s home – placing the magnetic door contact sensor at the main entrance, and sticking the activity detectors in the kitchen, living room or bathroom. Every time the elderly passes by the device or opens the front door, the sensor forwards a note to the Family Guardian Monitoring app, which can be accessed by family members and caregivers.
The app displays a daily and weekly report on the resident’s activity. As an extra safety measure, the app also informs the users when the senior’s activity drops below a critical level, indicating that something went wrong.
Complementing medical alert services with smart sensors is an important step towards assuring the safety of elderly. While traditional medical alert systems and fall detection pendants merely react to an emergency situation, safety detectors may help relatives notice the aging resident’s falling health in time. The app also notifies the distant users about anomalies, such as the elderly entering the bathroom, but not leaving it for hours, which may indicate an unnoticed fall. It’s also important to mention that the sensors don’t record live footage, thus it’s not invading the senior’s personal life. Even though this initiative is still in an early phase, we expect further development in the field, with other medical alarm coming up with similar innovative solutions.
