Invoicing apps have made the lives of business owners a lot easier since they were first announced. The idea was that you could get to work doing what you love, and leave the paperwork to the computers. This was a brilliant idea, but most small businesses couldn’t afford the expensive hardware and software required. Anymore the hardware is cheap to come by and there are open source alternatives. These open source alternatives tote the same features as their expensive cousins at no cost. There are a lot of open source invoice software options out there right now; so which ones are worth looking at?

MyClientBase invoice management

The first open source invoice tool is MyClientBase. This particular provider has quite a few features that make it one of the best free invoicing systems you can use. Everything is web based so your invoices are available as long as you have internet access. You also get the option to configure certain tax rates for individual states, or set a flat rate for everyone. However, one of the best features is their configurable invoice template. It’s remarkably easy to configure it to your needs and adds that bit of professionalism your customers want to see.

BambooInvoice, how does it compare?

BambooInvoice is another hosted invoicing tool that has a number of compelling features. The programmers that work on BambooInvoice have a single goal in mind; creating an easy to use and attractive interface for invoices. For that reason, they use AJAX and JavaScript to keep things attractive, slightly interactive and easy to use. It’s able to export all invoices to a PDF; all you need is the DOM extension installed. This is excellent news to those who want to keep a paper copy of their invoices on top of their digital backup.

SimpleInvoices the powerhouse invoice tool

SimpleInvoices is a very powerful option for a free invoice management tool. SimpleInvoices comes with exporting and emailing in PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or even plain text. You can choose from itemized or total invoices while having full control over the templates used for both. It also comes with full Paypal gateway support to make it very easy for your customer to send payments. If you have a recurring service, you can even setup invoice plans to bill the customer at regular intervals. This is quite possibly one of the best invoicing apps available, free or otherwise, as I’m sure you can see.

siwapp the easy to use invoice tool

What siwapp lacks in features it makes up for it in ease of use and installation. Everything is located in menus that make sense and learning how to change something will only take a minute to find. Also, siwapp comes with PDF exports for invoices, which can be printed for your convenience. If you don’t have time to finish an invoice, then don’t worry; siwapp saves your drafts and invoices so you can continue editing them whenever you need. All of this is backed up by fantastic security and backup features. No one will have access to your invoice files that you don’t allow, and if something happens to the files you will have a backup ready so you can get back to work.
