For many families, parental control software is an essential investment. But if you’re on a budget, it can be a big expense and there are only a few solutions on the market that don’t break the bank. Here, we’ll be comparing two of those options: FamilyTime and Kaspersky Safe Kids. Both help parents keep track of their children’s online activity, but they work in very different ways. Each option offers monitoring tools and the ability to restrict what content your kids can see. However, while one works better indoors, the other is more useful when your children are out of the house. But which one presents the best value for money? And which, ultimately, will suit your family best?

Overview comparison for FamilyTime, Kaspersky Safe Kids

FamilyTime

Although FamilyTime isn’t the most feature-filled software around, it does have some truly unique functions. Primarily based out of Pakistan, the software has been innovating since 2013. Since FamilyTime only works for Android and iOS (with some limitations for the latter), its features take advantage of mobile technology. For instance, kids in trouble can use FamilyTime’s SOS alert button that sends the child’s location to the parent via the app while reassuring the child to remain calm. If you have a child who’s old enough to drive, the software also records driving speeds, so you’ll know if they’ve gone over the limit. FamilyTime has more standard features too – you can block unwanted apps and restrict screen time. The latter is impressively done, as kids are able to ‘bank’ screen time they don’t use and save it for later.

Users can get support by either live chat, email, or over the phone, although the website has some excellent guides to help you along the way. The price for FamilyTime depends on how many devices you need to cover, and while prices rise rapidly with each extra device it’s a bargain if you just install it on one phone. If you want to test the service out first, then you can take advantage of FamilyTime’s free 3-day trial.

Kaspersky Safe Kids

One of the most famous names in the internet security industry thanks to products like its antivirus software, Russian company Kaspersky also entered the parental control software market with Safe Kids. As you would expect from a company that has been around since 1997, the software is polished and user-friendly. Compared to FamilyTime, Kaspersky Safe Kids has far more features overall. The software lets you set up separate profiles for your children with different levels of restrictions depending on their age. There are plenty of categories to choose from or you can block websites individually – allowing you to truly tailor the software to your needs. You can also set usage limits, although the system isn’t as dynamic as FamilyTime’s. What’s more, Kaspersky Safe Kids offers you expert advice from a child psychologist to help you through the entire process.

Kaspersky Safe Kids is available on macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. Like FamilyTime, it uses your mobile device’s GPS to track a child’s location. There is a totally free version of Kaspersky Sake Kids available, but you won’t have access to all the features. Instead, you’ll have to upgrade to the Premium version, which is recommended as it’s one of the cheapest on the market, and you can test it out first with a free 7-day trial.

Conclusion

Who said great parental control software had to be expensive? FamilyTime and Kaspersky Safe Kids prove that you can do it on a budget. And it’s FamilyTime that shines the most when it comes to mobile coverage, with the SOS feature ideal for children who prefer the outdoor life. For everything else, Kaspersky Safe Kids is the best overall, with lots of content filtering and monitoring options. The fact that you’re given professional advice along the way really helps parents get the most out of the software. If cost is your main concern, nothing competes with Kaspersky Safe Kids, even though FamilyTime is great value as well. Naturally, it’s not a decision you want to rush into, so make sure you read our expert reviews and test out each service’s free trial before you decide.
