When we discuss food, well a bit of sour never hurts. Tastes differ of course, but for Virtual Private Networks (VPN) a bad aftertaste in your mouth is more than often not a bad sign. This article is about two VPN companies that are indeed promising, but there is just a little bit of jumble going on that might discourage some people from thinking twice about a purchase. Nevertheless, we are believers of second chances, as thus Astrill and StrongVPN each get a closer look. And indeed there are promising sides to both of them. Astrill is just a great service in general, and StrongVPN has fine speeds and the rare location China. However, the former feels a bit incomplete by itself without extra purchases, and the latter is cloudy about its security and privacy policy. Let’s zoom in on both companies and their services.

If you really want to dive into the intricate specifics of what a VPN has to offer, Astrill is a service for you. They offer a good variety of features, but some of them do not come automatically with your standard purchase. These include more advanced extras like an app filter and web cache among others. Too bad, many of the payable add-on features are free in some way or another at other companies, including an NAT firewall. You even have to pay for select additional safety protocols, which is a bit closer to ridiculous. Otherwise though, expect high quality in every aspect of their service.

This is a VPN company that takes its job seriously, and the image they created around this work ethic corresponds to it. A rare addition to device support, you can also utilize the Linux client of the company. And – to put further emphasis on this attitude – speed values and the stability of Astrill’s connections are also good.

StrongVPN

StrongVPN has a couple of strong sides that stand out, one of which is definitely access. This is one of the new companies that help out Chinese users who want to experience internet outside their country. Speeds are also more or less fine – they are above average for sure. However, we had a few eyebrows lifted about privacy. Even though Chinese people can have their way, StrongVPN often favors the PPTP security protocol for reason. It is the least safe one today, which makes us think that access from China is done in a controlled manner (the Great Firewall of China has every capability to detect and block PPTP).

Also, StrongVPN has a limited number of server switches for you, which is actually rare. Most companies let you browse wherever you want, and being a bit forced to think twice about your connections is not appealing. A VPN should aim for more online freedom. And, all of this comes at a below average price. This is not the strongest VPN service around, but for some specific uses, we can imagine buying it.

Conclusion

All in all, the aforementioned sourness lingers a bit in our mouths. Both of these companies have their own approach to doing VPN business, but they do so on a bit less favorable terms than other organizations. StrongVPN is only strong on the lack of security for a VPN, and while there are some shiny moments, speeds in themselves are not necessarily enough to make up for the company’s shortcomings. Astrill’s shoes are in a better condition, though; the overall presentation and the list of features you are presented with are impressive. However, some of them are not free, you have to pay additional money for them.
